I'm trying to do my first sync upgrade on my 2013 Explorer and have tried every suggestion possible on the forum and I always get the same error "File Not Found" "Please check that the installation file is in the root directory of your storage device". So far I've tried:

  1. (3) different USB drives
  2. Using touch screen for App updates
  3. Using steering wheel commands to select USB drive

At this point, It's either take it to the dealer or give up...

Hey dougarndt,

Have you tried a master reset prior to inserting the USB? If not, please give that a try first:

http://owner.ford.com/how-tos/sync-technology/myford-touch/software-updates/how-to-perform-a-master-reset.html?sync=my-ford-touch

Also, did you unzip the file directly onto your USB or onto the desktop first?

I am having the same problem updating my 2015 F150 from Sync 2 ver 5.8 to 5.9.

Cannot find any decent info on the web anywhere including here

Hi ivisonj,

Please disregard the 5.9 update showing on your account. This was added to accounts by mistake and there is currently no file to download and install.

I'm have the same problem.

Which SYNC system do you have, James:

http://owner.ford.com/how-tos/sync-technology/all/get-started-with-sync/how-to-identify-your-sync-version.html

Currently, systems showing an invalid update are basic SYNC and SYNC with Voice-Activated Navigation. The 3.8 MyFord Touch update is valid and can be installed.

I was able to use a different program to unzip the files directly to the USB memory stick, but I still get the same errors.

The folder structure on the memory stick looks something like this...

  • Gen2v38build15128updatepackageNARev2
    • autoinstall.lst
    • DONTINDX.MSA
    • SyncMyRide
      • BT4T-14D546-EE.cab
      • BT4T-14D546-FB.cab
      • EA5T-14D544-AD.zip
      • etc,

Is this correct?

Good morning everyone!

I just received word that the "file not found" error is for all updates currently showing available on the website. Please sit tight while my support investigates this. I don't have an ETA, but for those of you with MyFord Touch, I suggest trying to re-download 3.8 later this week.

I see this problem has been around for quite a while. Here it is 2021 and I am having the same problem. Did Ford ever find a fix?

Hi jj. As Multitask asked, what do you have, what are you attempting to do? More information will certainly be helpful.

What vehicle and model year do you have? What version of SYNC and version number (found in SYNC settings)?  What are you attempting to do? What have you attempted to do? From where did you download any SYNC files you are trying to install? What instructions did you follow...etc. etc.

The more information you provide, the better the chance someone may be able to assist you.

Get back to us and good luck.

For Sync 2, the flash drive (thumb drive) should be USB 2 (3 might works but I doubt it). It should be formated as FAT 32, or FATex, Also, if on a Mac, make sure it was formated with MBR on

There should be 2-3 files, (one will be 0 size) and a folder with files in it, and nothing else.

So it is 2024 and I am also having the same problem with my 2016 Explorer. The first message I got was "Installation failed! The installation has run out of space or does not work with this version". Now after I got that I came back in and deleted everything and downloaded the file once again. Once I put the USB drive in the slot it said "File Not Found! Please check that the installation file is in the root directory of your storage device". Also when I download the update there are 22 different files that come with it. Am I not supposed to put them on the USB drive?

Hi ElizabethG and welcome to the Ford SYNC Forum. More information may be helpful.

For example:

- What model year/vehicle do you have?

- What version of SYNC is currently installed in your vehicle?

- What are you attempting to update, your SYNC system or your NAV/Navigation system?

- Where did you obtain the update files from? The official Ford or Lincoln SYNC 3 NAV update website, or another source?

- Did you precisely follow the SYNC 3 or NAV system update instructions? They have to be followed precisely, or the update will not be successful.

I can also state that from experience, it sounds as though you have too many files on the USB. However, that is blind Internet diagnosis, which is worth exactly what we pay for it.

Get back to us with more information and good luck.

As I have said before, it's NOT just to put the one (1) file on a flash drive....

Plus , and this time, if it's working fine, please do not update.... you 'might' have issues...

3.10 seemed to have issues with 'some' vehicles, this is why there is a 3.11 and even then Sync 4 it what is currently coming out with with Sync 5 coming out eventually, Sync 2 was discontinued a LONG time ago..

HAha... even my Tag line is not up to date, I don't have the Lincoln anymore....

Ok, here's the problem...

2013 Edge is not Sync 3 or even Sync 2, it's My Ford Touch, the last version for that was 3.10

If your screen is divided into 4 quadrants (phone, climate, audio, NAV/ball compass) or you have a label; "Sync powered by Microsoft" you have MFT.

Sync 3 was introduced on some models in 2016 (eg Escape, F150) and other models in 2017 (eg Fusion).

Go to the General button on the home screen then hit About Sync

If you have Sync 3 lower than v3.2.x the highest level offered by Ford for your vehicle is v3.0.20204.

If you have Sync 3 higher than v3.2.x the highest level offered by Ford is v3.4.23188

Now the question, "can I go from 3.0.x to 3.4.x", officially through Ford the answer would be NO.

That said you can use Cyanlabs updater at your own risk, just remember that a dealer is not going to be able to troubleshoot a bad upgrade, nor will you be able to pull updates directly from Ford's site as you will no longer be on a supported version.
