If you think that going to Sync 3 3.xxxxxx will stop your troubles with the 3G modem, it will not....

But if the dealer tells you that you do not have a 3G modem, do you have one at all?

If you do not, then updating your Sync 3 to 3.xxxxx will not change anything.  ? ( from 1.xxxxx)

Other than looks and some added 'features'

If I understood correctly,  I do not have a modem at all.  However I am trying to do the upgrade to hopefully solve my problems as stated in my original post on Wednesday.

Why do you ask about WiFi? My system will not upgrade over WiFi. Only with USB. Do I need to try connecting to WiFi while do the download by USB?

Other questions: Should my Bluetooth be turned off on my phone?  And does the Radio need to be On or Off or does it matter?  I have read some instructions pertaining to these options.

Hi KCW. I ask because having as much information as possible is helpful, even if certain information may ultimately not matter. Also, because you asked about the last WiFi update date on your SYNC screen, and I am trying to help you.

However, since I did ask, what is the answer?

Concerning your other questions...No, you do not need to be connected to WiFi to perform USB updates. And no...Bluetooth does not need to be turned off on your phone. And audio system on/off does not matter.

Just closely and carefully follow the instructions on the Ford SYNC 3 update website. And have patience, since it will likely be a ~1 hour or so update time.

Reply back with the answer to the WiFi network question, keep us updated and good luck.

Hi KCW. And yes, you are correct that updating your SYNC 3 software to the latest version is the smart thing to do. SYNC updates also are designed to solve compatibility issues with newer iOS and Droid software. Therefore, it may help with your 4G phone issues. Either way, installing the latest SYNC 3 software is the smart thing to do.

Again, keep us updated and good luck.

Best practice is to unplug anything that is connected to the sync unit....  no need to remove the bluetooth, but more so the physical.  like ipod, etc...

yes it will reboot 2-3 times... possibly more if need be...

the whole process might take about an hour...

Some people hook up a trickle charger for the battery, some go for a long drive....  just as long as the vehicle is running all that time.  ?

USB that can be used is fine for USB 2 , USB 3 an also be used as long as they are formated as fat32, and MBR ...

There should be 2 files and 1 folder with files in it...

1 file will show as 0k in size , it is just a marker to tell the system not to index the drive...

Ok, so the part that deals with 3g does not apply here

The phone disconnecting, could be software driven.  BUT know that if upgrading from 1.xxx to 3.xxx does not 'fix' that, it could be defective hardware (the ACM tends to be the culprit)

there are to ways to know... upgrade the software (should be done anyway). or have the dealer plug it in and test it...  first one is free... the dealer might charge

Thanks everyone. Hopefully I have my USB flash drive ready now. Just have to take a long drive (or at least be patient & let it run continuously). Maybe I can report back by end of week that it updated successfully.  And solves my problems.  If not, I feel like the problem will either be a bad antenna or bad APIM.  I did get the Code U3000 about Control Module, but according to TSB, that it's possible the update will help.  Fingers crossed ??

Again thanks to all.

Hi KCW. Probably too late to inform you now, but a long drive is usually a better choice (in my opinion), in order to avoid engine shutdowns during the update process.

Definitely let us know how you make out, and good luck.

Ok guys, I have been successful today with my USB flash drive Sync Update.  Hooray!!! It did take at least 2 hours probably closer to 2.5 hours.  Only have 1 issue.  I did wait 15 to 20 minutes after getting the Installation Completion. Closed the screen & waited. It did continue a little while longer as I saw "Connecting" flash up several times in top left corner of screen.  {By the way, "Connecting" does flash up occasionally while it does "Updating System Software"}  Then after no more "Connecting" for 5 minutes or so, I shut the car off.  Took out the USB.  Waited several minutes & then cranked the car back up.  I did see "System Updated" flash in top left corner.  Waited for several more minutes while "Download symbol in Right hand corner appeared".  Maps continually showed loading.  Could not connect phone, so I did a "soft reset" (holding the Seek Up/Fast Forward & Radio Power Button until screen goes black), then reboots.  Connected phone & all seems good; except, it still showed maps downloading.  Checked the Version of Settings & update is showing 3.0.20204!!!  Also connected to WiFi & selected to Scan for Updates (which I didn't have before), but got error message of "Previous Scan was incomplete. Please try again when convenient" in hopes of changing the Date. Decided to stop & will crank car up tomorrow morning & hope all works well.

Then Inserted USB Flash Drive into computer to update that Installation was Complete under My Ford Account; however, I did not get a XML log file on the USB.  I figure it's probably due to the fact that the message "System Update" came after the USB was removed.

Can I re-insert the USB in the morning & see if it will download the Finished "XML log file"???  Or would it be best not to Insert again???  Or any other suggestions???

HI KCW. A lot to digest there. If your vehicle shows v3.0.20204 as your current SYNC version, then you successfully updated.

SYNC 3 and SYNC 3 NAV maps are two entirely different downloads and updates. Therefore, I am assuming the loading/downloading maps message was simply the old maps version being transferred over to the new SYNC 3 files. What NAV maps version is listed in your SYNC settings?

Yes, you can go through the installation process again to try and get the XML file.

As I stated to begin this reply, there was lot to digest there. So realizing we are not there to watch what happened, just be patient. Do not try to connect/disconnect things, soft reset etc. etc. while the update is ongoing or shortly after. If you are performing the update with the vehicle sitting in your driveway and engine running, do not keep opening and closing the doors etc. etc.  All those extraneous actions can overload the system.

Keep us updated and good luck.

As far as the .xml file, if you want to wait for it (it is in the root of the flash drive) you can, but it's not a big deal (and I seem to remember that ford no longer allows for uploading those...) it basically told the web site you did it... but I really doubt they care anymore.  Especially because they are working more on Sync 4 now.

BUT, glad you got the Sync 3 update to work.  Current Maps are 2-20 but I think you would now have to pay for those, as only the last couple year cars got them for free.

Question about updating Sync 3, Build 20204 over WiFi???  What is the average download time using WiFi & Scan for Updates???  Need to do my parents' cars.

My 2016 Edge worked GOOD today! Still planning to work on correcting the Latest Update Date as show in picture below.  May eventually try re-inserting USB flash drive to see if I can get the XML Log file to show Successful Update on Website.

For anyone you may need to know:  When updating my system, "Updating System Software" shows in the top left corner (as show below), then occasionally "Connecting" will flash in top left corner.  My System never rebooted any that I am aware, just the flashing "Connecting ".  I did the large screen, "Installation Complete " stating to remove USB & will take effect after next vehicle start-up.  I suggest, Do Not Take Out USB at this time!  And definitely wait approximately another 15 to 20 minutes, as my system still showed the flashing "Connecting " several more times. It was after I switched car off, open & closed driver door, then open door again & started car that the "System Updated" flashed in top left corner.  I feel that's probably when I would have gotten the XML Log file downloaded to the USB.  As bbf2530 has stated, "Be Patient", and I will add "Be EXTREMELY Patient "

Thanks bbf2530 for your help!!!

Also let me state I updated from Version 1.0.15139 to 3.0.20204. And my folder SyncMyRide had 6 files. Most likely due to the fact I had never updated since purchasing my car.

Hi KCW. You are very welcome and congratulations on the successful update!

There is no accurate way to estimate how long a WiFi update will take, or if your parents vehicles will even update via WiFi at all. Too many variables, including WiFi network speed, strength of signal where the vehicle is parked, how long the vehicle is parked within the network signal area etc. etc.

Just like with your Edge, the best way to approach this would be to perform the SYNC update via computer download from the Ford or Lincoln SYNC 3 update websites, then install via USB flash drive.

And again: If you are going to try and scan again for a WiFi update  to get that date corrected, be sure your Edge is connected to a WiFi strong network signal. If you have not already done so, you must go into the SYNC settings of your Edge and physically connect your vehicle to your home (or another) WiFi network, enter the password etc. And be sure you are parked close enough to the WiFi router to get a strong signal.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.
