2020 ford escape. USB plays but volume subtly goes up and down. Radio does not

I also assume there are no steering wheel controls to change tracks?

Hi wvvike. Can't explain why you are having the volume issue. Have it looked at and corrected under warranty.

Concerning the steering wheel controls: On my 2018 Lincoln MKZ, you use the steering wheel audio volume control to switch "tracks" forward and backwards. EDIT - Sorry, Brain Cloud there. Not the volume control. To change tracks ahead or previous, my MKZ uses the same Seek Next and Seek Previous buttons used to change radio/Sirius radio stations and channels. Those same controls are used to answer/hangup the phone, as mwjones mentioned below.  Hopefully your Escape is similar.

Your Owners Manual also explains these controls, along with many more features you are probably not familiar with yet.

Good luck with your new Escape.

I can't look at my 2020 Escape Titanium at the moment because its in the shop, but on the Steering Wheel, right hand controls you should have buttons for Answering and Hanging up the phone. They also serve as Next/Previous track.

Looking at your owner's manual (online) there are 100 mentions of the word "volume."  Some are related to the heating/cooling system but many are in the radio controls section.  Without much detail there's also mention of "Automatic Volume".  I didn't dig deeply enough to see if there's a Sync setting for that in your Escape.  In my '16 Edge the automatic volume (increases/decreases sound system volume based on speed and background noise) can be set to low/medium/high sensitivity in the vehicle settings area of the main screen.
About skipping tracks, it appears there are several steering wheel control configurations.  One has arrows indicating skip forward or back while others don't appear to offer the option (which is very odd).  Take a look at page 79 of your manual for more detail and, just for grins, try voice control to skip tracks.

Cheers!

As far as the subtle volume changes, could it be the speed sensitive volume that you are experiencing?

Good suggestion.  But that also effects the radio which the original poster said was not effected.  Although maybe it actually is but just more noticeable on USB music?

Those buttons do change tracks when I am playing music in CarPlay. So I would have thought they would work with the USB but have not tried that yet. I guess I am old school. In my old Escape (Original SYNC), I could import a CD into Jukebox. I miss that.
