Sync 3 Update

Recommended Posts

Can anyone tell me what new functionality is in the latest Sync 3 update? The Ford webpage contains a link that says something about describing the new functionality but the page it takes you to does not contain any information about that.

As it is my current Ford Sync 3 system does not recognize my usb-c Android phone (it does recognize my old micro-usb Android phone) and I was hoping that this update might contain a fix for that issue.

HI Michael. Unfortunately so far, information as to what SYNC3 updates actually contain/fix/update/add/change is scarce. The Lincoln/Ford websites merely state that the update improves usability and user experience...blah, blah. The only way to find out if it will help your particular issue is to download and install it.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

I have used 3.0 18xxx, and it saw my Pixel 2 and 3

Now I'm at 3.4 and it still sees my Pixel 3 ...

Both used the USB C from the front console.... it will disconnect BT once in a while, but it's less than it used to be.

I will try to install it tomorrow and report back what I find. The instructions say to let the engine run during the install but the Sync 3 system is in a Ford Transit with a diesel engine and the Ford manual tells you to not run the engine at idle for "extended periods" (whatever that means) so I will do it while on a trip. Hopefully it will not brick the system.

The bottom line is that they know it will take about 30-60 minutes, and they don't want you to run your battery down. note: you have a bad battery if that happens

so if you trust your battery to last, you don't have to drive it

Hi Michael. I am forced to disagree with my friend Multitask here. I would strongly advise you, and anyone else reading this, to only perform the update with the engine running the entire time, as instructed by Ford. The engine must be running or driven the entire time.

Even if the only reason Ford wants the engine running is in case of a weak battery (which is only theoretical), the Delayed Accessory/Battery Saver feature turns off accessory power after 10 minutes. That will pooch your entire install.

Therefore, I would strongly recommend following what Ford tells us to do.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

I have come to the conclusion that this update is ONLY for vehicles factory-equipped with in-dash NAV.  It must attempt to fix Sync3/NAV issues and nothing else.  I can't say I'm unhappy because another Sync 3 update is not something I'd look forward to.

I agree with the above... I forgot about the auto-shut off , as my Hybrid doesn't do that ...

Nah, the update is for nav and non-nav , but not all cars are getting it... I've read some Mustangs are not getting it...

Updates like this are usualy bug fixes, but as they say , if it isn't broken don't fix it...  ?

Well, in any case, my Sync 3 system would not accept the usb drive with the update. It acted as though nothing had been inserted into the port and never ran the update. I will try with a different usb stick later when I can get to it and have some time.

For safety's sake I tried to do the update while driving as I did not want the auto shutoff to brick my system.

Hi Michael David. Not sure how long you drove with the inserted USB before you gave up. I can tell you when I performed this update, the system did not give an "Installing System Updates" message for ~10 minutes. Up until then, i thought nothing was happening.

Same thing here, nothing after 5minutes so I pull the USB out then the screen display  "The System update will resume when the USB is back in" (not verbatim) so I put the USB back in and it display "System Updating..."  10 minutes later it was done.

The report back your update did not work and the link for Manual Update on the Lincoln site does not work either...

I had the memory stick in the port for a good part of our drive back from our campsite to home - at least 30 minutes - and nothing happened. Also no message when I unplugged it.

I found the old flash memory that I used for the initial update from 2.2 to 3.0 some months ago and copied the new update to it and will try again on our next trip (which is scheduled for next week). Thanks for the information.

I just downloaded the update to USB and it is V3.0.21 build number 19205. It took about 3 minutues of driving before it showed it was updating and then about 10 minutes till finished.

I can't find information on what it updated but everything seems to be working fine.

The USB was formatted as exFAT and I followed the instructions for PC.

The auto shutoff can be temporarly disabled by using the left hand steering wheel controls. It will then automatically turn back on the next time the vehical is restarted.

As I stated above I updated SYNC 3 to V3.0.21 build number 19205. Today I connected my iPhone 7 by USB to use Apple Carplay and the phone just kept beeping and then flashing repeatedly.

I had to perform the "Master Reset" on SYNC 3. Then I had to remove the bluetooth pairing and the Apple Carplay setup from my wife's phone and mine and then reconnect the bluetooth for both phones and reconnect Apple Carplay for both phones.

After that Apple Carplay now works again, the speedometer reading that shows in Waze use to be 12-13mph too high, it's now within 1mph of the cars speedometer. I thought that problem was in Waze but apparently it was on Fords SYNC 3 end.

That is really interesting. I had the exact same speed issue with my wife's iPhone 6 with Waze and Google Maps and assumed it was the phone because I did not have the issue with my Samsung S7 Edge. Perhaps it was Sync 3 all along.

I still need to do the update and will try the next time we take out the RV with its Sync 3 system. I don't want to worry about keeping the system running when it is in storage. Thanks for your post.

Hey FG,

Now that you've been using the update awhile have you noticed any glitches?  My update to 19205 broke the equalizer.  All the controls (treble, mid, bass) were centered after the update and they always returned to center after I made adjustments and backed out of that screen.  My volume indicator also stopped working.  The circle with the number inside appears but it always displayed 0 (zero).

I've rolled my system back to 18093 (after doing a system reset to factory) but the volume indicator is still broken.

I checked and my treble, mid, and bass were at centered but that's because I had to perform the master reset. I then changed their settings and shut off the vehical and restarted and they were still as I set them (not centered). My volume control is working fine and displays an increasing or decreasing number in the circle when it's changed. My suggestion is to re-download the software update and re-install it, then perform a master reset before you set up the equalizer. Hope it works for you.

Thanks for the response.  I ended up loading a backup copy of APIM.  That fixed the glitch and all's well now.

Cheers!

That is the same issue I am having.  One USB drive said error and the other one just didn't seem to do anything.

I am going to try again and see if it installs the update.
