Just as a side note... This web site is not owned by Ford, so do this at your own risk.  8)

Not saying don't do it....

======

I just checked, you get there by doing a search on the owner.ford.com site for 'map update' and within a few clicks you get to this site, so they sanction it.

Tried the site for my 2018 Fusion Platinum.  When I enter the VIN & ESN I get error 016 and a message to call them.

They took a report and will try to resolve the issue.  Hopefully they will do better than the Sync team since I have never been able to upload Sync updates to report completion the entire time I have had the car.

So what is the trademark date of maps?

I don't see that information on Ford's site but there is this ( https://syncnavigation.com/ford/home  bottom of the page):
" *Data points above represent the changes in the HERE Map Database between Q1 of 2017 and Q1 of 2018. Exact data may vary by product. "

So it appears the most recent data in the new map is first quarter 2018 making it nearly two year old mapping/poi info at best.  ?

trademark?  not sure what you mean?

If you mean what is the latest maps date, I'm sure it will depend on your vehicle... I would say 116 to 118 i.e 2016 to 2018, but those would be about 2-3 years behind the actual date...

So if you have Sync 3, with 114 or 115, these would be improvements , I think 2019 vehicles would be free updates, otherwise it will cost, but you don't have to go to the dealer.

Update on my download issue.  The vendor called me back and let me know I was using the modem ESN instead of the Sync ESN.  DUH!!!  Anyway, after I used the correct one, I was getting an internal server error message.  So I called them back and now my issue is resolved.  The maps are downloaded and I will install them sometime this weekend.

Seems like this vendor has their act together.  I wish the regular Sync help line was like this.

By the way, the update was free for my 2018 Fusion Platinum (download) or $40 to have a USB shipped.

Hi all.  Yes, I have also downloaded my SYNC3 NAV maps update file (well, it is a large file, >13Gb so is downloading as I write this) from the Lincoln/ALOM Technologies site.

Instructions state to plan on a 1 hour install, during which time the car/engine must be kept running, so I will install it tomorrow during a 2 1/2 drive I have to Penn State.

As alcohenusa mentioned above, the map update is complementary for 2018-2019 vehicles.  No charge if you download the files yourself onto your computer, or a $40 charge to have them mail you a USB drive containing the files. I opted to download for free.

I will post back tomorrow night or Sunday and let everyone know how the install went on tomorrows drive.

To get your SYNC ESN serial number, go to "Settings" on your SYNC screen. Then scroll down to and click on "About SYNC". Then be sure to scroll to the bottom to get your "SYNC Serial Number (ESN)" number, not the "Onboard Modem Serial Number (ESN)", which is listed first.

FYI: My current NAV Map file in my 2018 MKZ is "NA 1 16". I am assuming the update will be "NA 1 17"? I will post back with that information too.

Good luck.

Hi gang. Here is my SYNC 3, NAV maps install update. ?

The install went smoothly. First however, a few things to mention. In my initial post above, I left out one step on how to find your "SYNC ESN Serial Number" on the SYNC settings screen. Click on the gear icon/Settings button on your SYNC  screen. Then click "General" (forgot that step earlier). Scroll down and click "About SYNC". Then be sure to scroll to the bottom of the  next screen to get your "SYNC Serial Number (ESN)" number, not the "Onboard Modem Serial Number (ESN)".

Okay, to the install. Just a few things to mention/warn about. My  install began as the instructions detailed. So I settled in for my 2 1/2  hour drive, expecting the installation to take about an hour, as per  the instructions. However, after about 5 minutes, the Installation  Complete screen popped up for about 20 seconds (but then disappeared),  stating that the install had been successful, I could remove the USB and  the update would be complete once I performed a restart cycle of the  car (as per the instructions).

I felt that was far too quick, so I left the USB in, kept driving and  did not turn off the car. Then after a few minutes, SYNC rebooted and  showed it was still performing System Updates. It would reboot  occasionally. Show information screens, etc. About 30 minutes into the  drive, the same thing happened. Stated install was complete, remove the  USB, stop and restart the car etc., but the screen disappeared again  after ~20 seconds or so.

I  still felt that was too quick, so I left the USB in and kept driving.  Same result, reboot, and System Updating began again. Occasional  reboots, Information screens etc.

At about the 1 hour mark, the System Update successful screen popped  up again, stating the install would be completed once I performed an  engine stop and restart. I kept driving for several minutes, and this  time the screen stayed visible and did not disappear.

I then pulled over and performed the required restart cycle  of...engine/ignition off (I also opened my door to turn off Accessory  power), wait at least 15 seconds (I waited a minute), then restart.

After restarting, I went into SYNC settings to check my NAV maps  version. It was successfully updated from version "NA 1 16" to "NA 1  18". WoooHooo!

So if there  is a moral to this story, I guess it would be: Despite some early/false  Install Complete screens, the install does seem to take ~1 hour. So  don't rush it, be patient, and ensure the install is actually complete.

Hope this information helps and good luck. ?

HI I updated, took like 38 min.   restarted took a look at the Sync Nav Lic,  still shows NA17,   never updated to NA18  or is it still NA17??

Hi fredsat.  My NAV maps version updated to "NA 1 18". Assuming you downloaded the same NAV update files from the same website I did, yours should have updated to "NA 1 18".

How long was the Update Complete Perform a Restart screen showing, before you pulled over and restarted? I think it is possible you shut down and restarted your car too soon, after one of the early/false Update Complete screens which I describe above. I did get one at the ~30-40 minute mark. I realize times can vary in different vehicles and situations, but in my case, the full update did take ~1 hour.

Perhaps try reinstalling. And this time wait longer before restarting, to see if the Update Complete screen disappears, to ensure the update is actually complete. That would be my educated guess, having performed the install and seeing the early/false completion messages myself.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

I would be interested in What year - make and original map version (115...), and maybe the system version (like 3.0_18xxx or 3.3_19xxx) too

Just so we all know what to expect when we do it...

I have 3.4_19101, and 1 18 of the maps in my 2018 FFH (I did the APIM upgrade from a non nav to a nav that came out of a 2019 and started with 3.0)

Hi bbf2530

I drove around for about 40 min waited until it said update completed, parked the car, went for lunch, came back started car, looked at licence info said NA 17.    I can try doing it again, and see what happens,   my car is a 2019 Ford Edge Titanium with Nav.  Got it in late February, so assumed this should be good to upgrade as it said no charge,.

Any suggestions would be appreciated,  DO i need to re-copy the files back to the USB stick as I am not sure there is a file that gets updated or something which stops you from using the same files ?????

Hi Multitask. Not sure who you were asking, so I will give you my information:

I have a 2018 Lincoln MKZ, currently equipped with the factory OEM SYNC 3.0, version 18093. I recently updated SYNC by USB from the Lincoln Owners website (version from factory was 17296). Version 18093 is the latest official, non-bootleg (for lack of a better term) version for my 2018 MKZ.

It came from the factory with NAV maps version "NA 1 16". That updated to "NA 1 18" with the NAV map update I installed yesterday.

Good luck.

Hi fredsat.  The first two times I received the "Update Completed. Remove USB. Restart your car to complete" screen (I am condensing and paraphrasing what it stated), I was in traffic so the screen disappeared before I could read it carefully and tap "Okay".  So if your screen disappeared before you could tap okay (or you tapped Okay very quickly), I think you had a false completion like I twice had (At ~5 minutes and ~30-40 minutes).

The third time the Update Complete screen appeared (after ~1 hour), I kept driving for another 5 minutes to see if it would disappear again. That time, the message stayed on the SYNC screen. I then pulled into a parking lot, parked, pressed "Okay", removed the USB and then performed the restart procedure as described in the installation instructions.

This is what I would recommend: Since your NAV maps version did not update, I have a feeling the update did not complete. I would try performing the install again.  You should be able to use the same USB, as it does not seem to add completion files to the USB, like a SYNC update does. Alternately, you can re-download the NAV update files and create a fresh USB install, if you would feel better about it.

I believe your 20189 Edge should certainly be updating to "NA 1 18", instead of staying at "NA 1 17". So I feel you inadvertently cut the update short. It almost happened to me too, so I can certainly understand it happening to others.

Keep us updated and good luck.

Got ya... it was a question for all...  8)

yes, mine is 'bootleg' but official files from Ford's site, not anywhere else.  8)

My 2018 FFH started with a non-nav 2.2 APIM, I updated it to 3.0 18xxx (forgot) and did the file 'found' that took it to 19205.  Bought an APIM w/nav that was supposed to be out of a 2019 F150, but I think it really had a F150 shell and Mustang main board but still as 2019

Put it in , did the 3.0 updates to it, ran it for a while with 115 maps.   then bought an APIM from a 2019 Expedition 3.0 but 117 maps, but the Mic didn't work, and the backup camera was wonky, so sent it back....  Could be the camera did not work cuz that truck has surround cameras, and my car just has 1 and freaked it out

So put the Mustang APIM back in , and  did the wipe and reinstall to 3.4 ... all is well...

Hi bbf2530

OK.   Will try once more,  I drove, saw the message indicating the update was completed, left USB  and went through the install again,  now I am going to try once more tomorrow and see what happens.  If not, will take it to the dealer and have them do it I guess. If they do not charge me for the install.  Ha, ha, like that's not going to happen, we all know that.

Hi fredsat. From your explanation just now, I am a little unclear as to whether you followed the installation instructions correctly.

Essentially, if you did not need to press "Okay" to get rid of the "Installation Completed, Remove the USB and Restart the Car" screen (or pressed it very quickly before the screen disappeared on a premature/false alert like the 2 I had), you probably stopped the update too soon. I'm probably the one confused, but just in case:

These are the basic instructions:

-It will probably take at least ~1 hour

- You need to start your car and keep the car running the entire time, until the very end.

- Insert the update USB.

- It will begin updating the NAV system.

- As it is updating, the SYNC and NAV systems may/will reboot several times, during which time you will get some screens explaining what it will do, what it is doing, etc.

- In my case, at ~5 minutes into the update, I got a screen stating my system update was complete. It told me I could remove the USB, turn off the car and restart to finish the final update procedure. However, the screen disappeared within about 10 seconds, before I could even press "OKAY". I ignored that screen, since it was far too soon, and let it run.  Within a few minutes, the system rebooted, restarted and after a short time, the top left of the screen once again told me it was performing a system update.

- The exact same thing happened about 30-40 minutes into the update. Screen disappeared before I could press "Okay". So I let it keep running and in a few minutes the screen showed it was still updating.

- Some time after the 1 hour mark, the same screen reappeared, telling me the system update was complete, I could remove the USB, turn off the ignition/engine and restart the car. I pressed "Okay" and removed the USB drive. The downloaded instructions said wait 15 seconds, then restart the car. I waited ~1 minute before restarting the car.  I restarted the car and after the system booted up I checked my NAV maps version and it was updated to "NA 1 18".

Sorry for the repetition in my posts and sorry if I misunderstood what you posted in your previous reply.  Just trying to save you some work and hope you get this finished properly on your next shot.

Hope it goes well tomorrow. Keep us updated and good luck.

Hi bbf2530

OK I think you miss understood what happened.

I put the USB stick in..and at the top of the screen, indicated system is updating software...... driving , driving.....30 min or so later the screen said, completed and I said OK.  Screen rebooted went black, Ford logo came up and then  to the regular screen  with the NAv/Audio, Phone ......stopped the car.  Turned off the vehicle, waited about 30 sec   restarted car,  looked at Sync screen info....scrolled down to the Nav info, says NA17   still.

I never say any info screen about what was going to happen next or any of the screen in the document that I downloaded.  Just "Software updating"   no other info except the end where it said Completed, and hot OK.

Will try again tomorrow.

Hi fredsat.  Yes, I thought I probably misunderstood what you were stating (sorry).

And since your maps version did not update to "NA 1-18", I also think you got the same premature/false "Update has finished, remove USB etc, etc" message that I got at ~5 minutes and then then ~30-40 minutes.  I received all the screens described in the instructions after the reboots at ~30-40 minutes. I hope you will get a full and proper installation if you let it keep going for more like a full hour.

I would recommend you do not hit "Okay" on the "Update has finished, remove USB etc, restart car, etc, etc" screen until that message has been displaying for at least several minutes.

Hope it goes well this time.  Let us know and good luck.
