As seen on another forum of whom I trust, he said that the file(s) with AM or AR are the only ones we should use (if it is not for NA but for EU)

Ah.Well, AM I do have. it is AR that I do not have in the folder.

It is too bad that Ford does not tell you what functionality is updated by which file. Then at least we would have some idea which files to use and which to skip, depending upon what we actually wanted to do.

Remember that 19149 is the latest version,18093 is a great and the previous version ford formally released.

19149 is what I just installed.

Is that a North American version? European? Something else?

The Ford site told me this morning that I had the latest version, and it is 18093. If there is a later version perhaps it will pair with my new phone, but I don't know where I can get it if the Ford site won't give it to me. Perhaps someone has a link?

Also a bit curious as to what new functionality might be in the update.

19119 and 19149 are not for release here.

19149 was for the EU not for US

I put 19119 on and so far so good, but I don't see anything good or bad...

I might try putting 19149 on, with only the file that has AM in it.

I'm daring like that.... I read that some of the other files are for EU cars that affect the voice n stuff ... I don't use the Sync 3 voice, so I won't care, but would rather not have to 'fiddle' with it

I have seen some suggestion that it might have to do with the physical usb connector. The new phone uses usb-c while my old Samsung, which does work with the system, uses a micro usb cable. I will check that out before I install a European update on my system. Hopefully the Ford tech will know something about this.

You need to remove the space character between the "http" and the "://".

I would also recommend using "https" instead of "http".

The space is there so your browser won't see the link as a clickable link.  (A trick to just show text).

If you are in USA I would not install it (after reading all posts here indicating it is a European release)

Unless you are willing to deal with the pains of 'beta' , i don't suggest the 19xxx files....

I've done beta testing before and still do for somethings... so I know what to expect and what to do (well most of the time)

I'm just hoping that Ford is looking at making the 3.3 and after work on older units.... I've read both ways that you have to have the newer hardware, and others say no it's just the way things are formated ....

I don't know what constitutes "newer" hardware, but I would hope it would work on the 2018 Transit models. I have more or less thrown my hands up in the air and just given up. My wife's iPhone 8 Plus worked the last time I tried so today I tried using my new iPad mini. Almost exactly the same OS, the same cables but no luck.

The odd thing is what happened. I plugged the iPad in and Waze popped up immediately, Everything seemed just fine. I then disconnected and tried again, and it would no longer work. I tried again repeatedly, but after the first success all subsequent efforts met with failure and, in fact, the iPad would not even bluetooth pair with the Sync 3 system. All very strange and very frustrating.

That makes me think your Transit needs to see the dealer and have them look at it

I will try the next time I have a scheduled oil change but since the tech at the Ford dealer told me that he could not get his Sync 3 system to work with his iPhone X I don't have a lot of confidence in them. However I do have one question.

If I use an Android device with Sync 3 I first have to bluetooth pair the device with Sync 3 and then connect it by usb cable. That works with my Samsung 7. But if I want to use an iPhone like my wife's am I supposed to bluetooth pair it first? Or just hook up the usb cable?

Perhaps that should be a separate thread since this thread is supposed to be about version numbers.

Not sure... try it both ways , see what happends

On another note, I just upgraded from the Pixel 2 XL to the Pixel 3 XL, and no hassles....

Yeah. But it is too late to return my S10 Plus. Perhaps I should have done that at the beginning, but the S10 Plus was on sale (a very good sale) and the Pixel was not. Saved some money and bought myself some aggravation. I do not think it was a good exchange ...

Still, if I could be sure that the Pixel would work I might be tempted to do so anyway. I would lose a couple of hundred dollars but, perhaps, avoid an ulcer.

Hi Michael.  I have  2018 Lincoln MKZ with SYNC 3. To use Apple CarPlay, you need to connect by USB cable. You don't need to pair via Bluetooth to use CarPlay alone, unless you also want to use the phone for incoming and outgoing calls through SYNC.

Thanks, but I guess I was not clear in my post. I don't want to run CarPlay, I want to run Waze or Google Maps and everything I read says I need to disable CarPlay to be able to do that, so I was wondering if I need to have the phone bluetooth connected to run those apps with Apple CarPlay disabled.

Hi Michael. With an iPhone, no.

You must connect via USB, but does not need to be paired by Bluetooth.

Not to mention that I do not believe you can use Maps or Waze without CarPlay... if there is a way, I would imaging most would be doing it....

I am puzzled by your response as the Ford Sync FAQ specifically says that the user must disable CarPlay to be able to use Waze.

Here is a section of the FAQ dealing with running Waze on Sync 3:

1. On your iPhone, open the latest version of Waze.

2Disable Apple CarPlay because SYNC 3 AppLink and Apple CarPlay cannot run simultaneously. SYNC 3 will remember this setting and Apple CarPlay will remain disabled until you activate it again.

Is there something I am missing?

Hi Michael.  Google Maps runs in CarPlay.

Currently, you need to disable CarPlay to use Waze, as it does not run in CarPlay. It only runs in AppLink.

Ah. OK. I did not know that there was any difference in the requirements for Google Maps and Waze. I guess I learned something today, so thank you.

As I am most interested in Waze, given its crowd-sourcing information, I will continue with it as my first choice. Google Maps is very good, but the information on Waze about traffic is really, really helpful.

You don't have to disable CarPlay to use Waze. In fact, it works better with CarPlay. It works with the AppLink services, but Waze support staff has already said they are not supporting it anymore. I would assume in future versions of the app, that it will be disabled.

Waze and Google Maps work better with CarPlay than without. I wasn't able to use Google Maps before I had CarPlay either.

So you are saying that the FAQ and instructions on the Ford web page that says that you have to disable CarPlay to run Waze are wrong? If so, then I am not terribly surprised as their instructions for updating the Sync 3 system were completely wrong.

Yes. AppLink is no longer supported by Waze and the experience with it sucks compared to CarPlay. A Sync 3.0 update was released a while back to include CarPlay for Sync 3.0 systems and it works well. Only thing is, if you have a 2016 MY (model year) then you'll have to upgrade your USB module (takes about 10-20 minutes). I picked one up online for about $30.

Beyond 2016 they used Apple CarPlay certified USB port module so those are fine to use from the start.

I re-read the FAQ and if you read it carefully it is clear that it is the Waze + AppLink combination that requires CarPlay to be disabled, not Waze itself, so although I could complain that the information was not clear I can not say it was wrong. My mistake.

I do not know if that functionality is in the Sync 3 system in my Transit chassis but I will find out the next time I try this. The chassis is 2018 but I am not sure that they upgraded the van chassis as quickly as the cars. The same phone and cable combination that worked in a 2018 Fusion did not work in my 2018 Transit but perhaps all of that will be taken care of by using CarPlay and not AppLink, so thank you for clarifying that for me.

I tried to do all of this with an iPad instead of an iPhone (the phone is my wife's and I really did not want to use it for navigation as she uses it for calls when we are on the road) but I did not have much luck with the iPad. It is not gps enabled so all location information is only an estimate based on internet usage and it does not offer CarPlay anyway.

Waze was previously released as a Ford AppLink app - which meant your phone and Sync3 could use Waze together, with your phone playing a major role and Sync providing a screen to see it on.  It was exciting when released, as it offered a cool replacement to the standard (and not too bad) Sync3 maps.

Yeay for AppLink - and what other amazing apps would we see?  McDonalds menu maybe?  Nope :(

But, it was SLOOOWW - and many people had issues getting it work. It would only work with a very recent Sync3 update (build 18093 from memory), and you would also need to disable CarPlay *AND* remove all memory of previously CarPlay used/known devices from Sync3 too, so that meant going into the CarPlay list of devices in Sync3 and deleting them all. Very odd that it would be so sensitive that disabling CarPlay would not be enough to make this work - you have to delete the known devices as well.

You would then connect your phone by cable to Sync3 and launch Waze on the phone.

If you were very lucky, a Waze icon would appear in Sync3 as an icon on the bottom menu - and you could possibly enjoy a SLOW version of Waze.

Waze is really awesome, but sadly Ford AppLink sucks.

I use Waze every day, but as an app within Android Auto - it's fast and brilliant.

My wife uses Waze every day as an app within Apple CarPay.

Apple recently (maybe within last 6 months ish) allowed Waze to be a map option under CarPlay!!

This was a great event for Waze, and those Apple users not enjoying AppLink.

A feature of the Waze on CarPlay was that the reported speed on the Waze screen was inaccurate... you need build 19149 to address that - but if you dont yet have that build, still use Waze anyway - as it is brilliant.

I hope this summary helps :)
