FOOLED: You May THINK You're Upgrading To v.3.0...

Recommended Posts

Since my plans for today went south in a hurry this morning, I have had the day to mess with what I THOUGHT was the upgrade to Version 3.0.

The first mishap was that Sync3 got fussy (again) and decided it doesn't like my new 32GB Version 2.0 USB drive. So, I had to go through the whole thing from scratch using my old 16GB drive that I used for the 2.3 upgrade (ignore Ford's instructions that you must use a 32GB flash drive). It worked fine. HOWEVER, at the end of the upgrade, I discovered it was only an upgrade to Version 2.3.17109. When I clicked on the down arrow on the top border of the screen, it just said "Continuous Software Improvement" in 50 different languages. No other info about the update given.

The upgrade notice in FordOwner only appeared last night, so this was not sitting around for months.

Humph. Note that the update is 2.2GB, and in my case, 12 files. Exact same as the 2.2 to 2.3 update. In car, took about 25 minutes. System required an ignition cycle after completing the first part (there are two parts). Had zero problems reporting the update back to Ford via the xml file that was placed on the USB drive.

Back to discussing the unauthorized v.3.0 update, I guess.

First off, did you format your usb drive to exFat? My 3.0 upgrade was 10 files and only 1.5GB. Of course it may be different in size depending on the vehicle. I have a 2017 FFE Titanium. My 3.0 upgrade never asked for an ignition cycle but I did power it off after it said the installation was complete, per the instructions from the Ford Owner site.

You might want to download the files again from Ford Owner and try again if you can. If not, then i'd schedule an appointment at your dealership.

This past week I traded my 16 Edge for 18 Explorer with Sync 3. It has 3.0, v17276 installed. According to Ford Owner site, it was uploaded with this file JR3T-14G381-AJ Date Confirmed:Dec 19, 2017. Now the site is telling me there is an update JR3T-14G381-AL SYNC3 v3.0, which by the way, is trying to update via wifi on a daily basis, but errors out saying it can't download the file. I downloaded to PC and transferred to my trusty thumb drive. Take to SUV and it goes through the routine, but I get the "You already have the latest update" message. I'm perplexed. I suppose I should leave well enough alone? Thanks.
