Why is there no uprising about Ford's failure to update maps?

Recommended Posts

I have a 2016 Expedition with SYNC3 using version 2.3. Maps are version 1 dot something, basically whatever came with my SUV. Needless to say, speed limits are wrong, roads and interstates are wrong which leads to a poor navigation experience. Some errors are 3+ years old. I called last week and a Ford rep in the SYNC department told me that navigation updates "might" come in spring or summer. This is crazy given the premium that we have paid to have navigation built in. Is there anyone who has received a better or more encouraging answer from Ford? If not, how do we make this issue more visible to create more urgency? I can't believe that there's no uprising to be found when googling this issue.

I would join im furious about it.. Im on version 1-14 in a 2016...when I picked up the mustang in 2016, the content was from 2013 so thats a 5 year outdated map content for north america

I called HERE maps, the people who release updates for fords and other makes, they all said "no notes in the system, no date yet for releasing update"

This is the probably the norm in the industry, I have owned at two different vehicle (Nissan & Hyundai) over the last 10 years and both you have to pay to get the maps update from the map maker, not the vehicle maker. And every time the maps were 2-3 years out of date when I purchased the vehicle.

I've got a 2017 Ford Edge Titanium bought in July 2017 and it came with NA 1 15 map revision which is 2 years old. I e-mail HERE maps and got no answer on when there would be an update. I also went on the Ford CHAT and they gave me no answer. I see on-line that Australia and the UK can get free map updates for 5 years. I guess Ford doesn't care about us here in the USA.

Same here as well. I have a 2016 Edge Titanium that I bought new off the lot in Dallas in July of 2016. My internal map data is the later, 1-14; meaning first quarter of 2014. That's the date of that particular release, who knows how behind that releases' data actually is.

One huge issue with the 1-14 nav data is the damn toll roads - it's always rerouting to avoid all DFW toll roads no matter what my settings preferences are set to. This is a big deal, and is completely internal to the algorithms set inside the nav database, not the Sync3 version you're currently running.

I cannot believe how out of touch Ford has become with their customers. Every other vehicle manufacturer has an A8 map version update that's compatible with secure USB, just go to here.navigation.com and look for a 2016 or newer GMC. They say they have an update available on USB drive - essential for us with newer Ford vehicles that have ditched the SD card slots that our updates used to be loaded on to.

When I call Ford, or Here, one will always refer me to the other in an endless circle jerk of screwing around their customer base. I really like Ford, but as they've come back from the brink of bankruptcy and folding forever, they again have become arrogant POSs that could give two craps that your nav (that we paid premium for) is out of date!!! Severely out-of-date data essentially makes our navigation useless.

Rant over!!

Oh, and yes, I went to their crap dealership and they wanted to charge me $500+ to add a $50 part so I could access Apple CarPlay. Oh, and at first they thought I was an idiot and had no clue the part needed even existed - they said it was a standard Sync3 update I could do at home (their techs are just as confused as their customers). So, guess whos a smart DIYer!? Yeah, bought the USB compatible Android/CarPlay unit at their own shop (they even price matched the part number) and swapped it out myself. So now I primarily use Apple Maps with CarPlay because their out of date internal nav database is so obsolete that it's useless. Phone data works great until youre in the sticks and have horrible signal, which is where an INTERNAL UPDATED NAV DATABASE would come in quite handy. Thanks a lot FORD, for stiffing your customers! Found On Road Dead!

I'm not furious about this subject or anything....(sarcasm).

Have

As a UK July 2017 Ford Focus owner that has a map version that appears to be around 2 years old I'm stunned that the UK will or could get free updates.

Personally I think Sync 3 has been a little bit of a disaster. My car is now 6 months old and Navigation hasn't worked from day 1. The Ford dealer is in the hands of Ford UK who simply don't care. I've had a new APIM fitted as well as a new GPS Antenna, the only thing that hasn't been tried is a software update because there hasn't been one.

I think like My Ford Touch, Sync 2, and todays Sync 3 it will become a short lived thing with a reputation for not being very good. Even Sync 3 basics such as the transition from Day to Night mode is appalling, like something from the 1990's.

Hopefully Ford will turn to the organisations more experienced in "In Car Multimedia and Navigation" and buy in a product that actually works for their future cars. Ford and Panasonic need to hang their heads in shame releasing a half hearted, unfinished and poorly tested system to the public.

I talked with the sales manager here in South Carolina and he called Ford. They told him that an update for the maps would be out sometime in March, he said they were very vague about when exactly and how. He also said that he had 2 other customers ask him the same question within the last week. Hope Ford follows thru and comes up with an upgrade.

I thought that the naviextras site was used for Australia updates. Will it also be used for the USA updates?

I don't know for sure, just re-posting link from MKX forum, but as it is my understanding, all sync3 hardware is the same, differences are options like NAV and language. If this is a NAV company and they make it for one country then it should work on any. The are most likely not the mapping company where the mapping data is derived, so if this is the case they would have the North America data available. But that is a my assumption, not knowledge, but it does not hurt to find out if they do and how much.

I agree with the posters on this Forum. Ford is useless. I bought a 2016 Ford Edge Sport in mid 2017 and it's maps were from 2014. Here were are in 2018 and

there are still no map updates. This is stupid. The HERE company has map updates available but Ford has not Approved/Released them.

What a crappy car company. As an example of how it should be done - Mazda has partnered with Garmin and it provides free annual updates.

I will never buy another Ford because of this. They just don't understand Technology nor their customers and they obviously don't read these forums!

Took delivery of a 2018 F-150 6 weeks ago.

Couldn't believe that the Nav system didn't recognize a new highway in my area completed 3 years ago!

I thought it was unusual...apparently not.

What is the maps revision in your 2018 F-150? The maps in my 2017 Ford Edge are "NA 1 15". I've seen on-line that owners with 2016 vehicles are "NA 1 14" just want to know if the 2018 even though they are out of date have a newer maps revision. It would be something that us owners with 2016 & 2017 could then contact our dealers with and at least argue to be updated to that revision. It may help us all if enough people complain to their dealers with actual knowledge that there is at least a newer revision out.

Don't feel bad. My 2016 Edge doesn't see some major 4 lane roads built over 5yrs ago. I was going back and forth between the Edge and a KIA Sorento back in 2016 when I bought the Edge. If I had known about this crap I would have bought the Sorento. BTW, the salesman and the manager promised all future map updates would be free. :lol2:

Thanks for the information. When I go talk to my dealer I will see if I can at least get the NA 1 16 map version. Does anyone know if the 14,15,16 relates to the year the maps are updated too?

I've had Nav units both 'in car' and 3rd party, they are usually 2-4 years behind, and to get updates cost $$$.

While I don't have Sync3 "yet" , I thought maps would be updated via wifi, not to say they would do it on a regular basis.

I have the A7 card for my sync 2, and A8 it seems is out, but I'm not going to nor do I need it yet.

If I really need to know that info, I'll use my phone. Someday soon, I'll use Android Auto for detail, and the built in nav for basic.

I have just had maps updated to NA 1 16 on Sync 3 on my 2017 Ford Ranger XLT. Maps still out of date in Australia. Bloody hopeless. Why can't Ford give the option of running other GPS software like IGO Primo which has a lot more features and up to date maps.
