Verizon Droid and Sync

Recommended Posts

My two year old Motorazr Max Vee worked fairly well except that it could not distiguish between different types of numbers (i.e. Cell vs Home) so it was a little awkward trying to get the right number. The Droid works much better, the only disappointment being the lack of support for text messaging.

My droid does not transfer the phonebook correctly. Only about a dozen of about 120 entries came over. No explaination or obvious difference I could see. Any ideas?

The lack of txt support is very disappointing! :(

All of my phonebook transfered from my Dare. So did my wife's Env 2.

None of my 256 contacts on my Droid will sync with my 2010 Ford Edge. This and a host of other problems are simply unacceptable. Bluetooth audio streaming needs to be fixed as well. The no txt messaging support is yet another ridiculous "purposely disabled" but otherwise free function.

On my Droid all of my 1300 contacts transfered. Bluetooth audio files are working.

How did you get those contacts into the Droid? Clearly not manually. I wonder if there is a pattern. i.e., the only ones I got tranferred may have been Gmail contacts vs contacts that were transfered from my Razr.

Used my gmail account. Itunes will sync with a gmail mail account if you have a itouch or Iphone.

My question is this: does the Droid respond to voice commands spoken through Sync, rather than directly into the phone; I read somewhere (cnet) that this was a problem, and that Bluetooth commands had to be spoken directly into the phone.

To get Phone book to transfer to new droid. Remove previous phone from list, do a master reset on the sync. turn vehicle off, open door to turn off radio then. Restart vehicle add new phone to sync list and go from there. I had no problems. I have 2009 F-150 with Nav and yes Cnet is wrong the voice commands do work via bluetooth I made a phone call from my truck via steering wheel buttons and voice commands while the droid was on the mutimedia stand in my house. Hope this helps. Also there is a sync version 2.1 update available on sync my ride. My droid has been in service 1 week and all is well! My previous phone was a Motorola V-950 but that is another story.

I know how to do it but when I do, only about a dozen of my contacts make it from the phone to the phonebook in my Sync and yes I have 2.1. Perhaps it only syncs Gmail contacts and not all contacts in the phone. That's something to look into. But, why then didn't it sync in both directions with Gmail in the first place?

This droid feels like a v1.00 beta version :(

I transfered all my contacts to Gmail Contacts using I tunes. There is a feature there that allows you to sync. From there the Droid syncs with gmail and thats how the contacts are in and stay synched.

I just got the Motorola Droid from Verizon. It paired fine with SYNC 2.1 in my 2008 Taurus X LTD. No fuse pulls or master resets were required. It all went smooth for me.

I read the warnings here, and typed in the SYNC password number fast. I had maybe 20 seconds to enter the number in horizontal mode using the slide out keypad. Just to make sure I had my teen daughter "texting-expert" work the keys. It took a couple tries only because we didn't understand the Droid keypad at first.

The phone book transfer to SYNC worked just fine with the 4 contacts I first entered manually. I also later entered 15 more phone contacts via my PC using a gmail account on the web, and they automatically went immediately to my Droid phone through the Verizon wireless network. Amazing! On downloading the phone book to SYNC, these contacts that were entered via gmail also downloaded fine. It seemed to take forever though, maybe 30 seconds to a minute? Fortunately I only do this phone book download manually maybe once every couple months.

Overall the Droid phone is amazing. I thought I wouldn't need a smart phone because I don't browse the away from home. But it does so much more with web connection.

Especially fun was using the free Pandora application to create a couple "personalized" radio stations to access from the Droid. Then I used the Bluetooth Audio in SYNC to play the Internet stations in my car as I drove around. I'd never want to do this before Droid, because of the extreme data charges. But now I got an all-you-can-eat data buffet for one 'low' price ($30/month extra).

LarryQW, I hear you with what we can get for just $30/month. With your DROID, have you tryed listening to Google's FREE GPS turn-by-turn directions via Bluetooth Audio with Sync? I'm also hoping there's an app that will read Google Chat messages over Bluetooth Audio.

I've never used my phone to navigate as I have the factory navigation by Ford/Pioneer. Yes, it's way more expensive than a Garmin or Google App, but it gives a much larger touch screen that's nicely integrated. For instance, it will lower the sound only on the front speakers whenever it needs to give instructions. And the Nav display also integrates nicely to the rear "Family Entertainment System", as well as display screens for setting radio, DVD, sound, phone, etc... . The only problem I have with Ford's navigation is its low number of Points of Interest. I often need to look up the business on my phone and manually input the address into the Ford Nav system.

If you don't use something like SYNC to integrate the text communication into your car, you may still be pushing many buttons on your phone, even if the voice comes over the bluetooth. I worry the additional fidling with the phone could be dangerous. In the case of Pandora, I just set it to a station before I start driving and control it from SYNC once on the road. I found that with SYNC commands on the Nav screeen that I can pause Pandora stations, but that's about all. Maybe more will be possible with SYNC upgrades in the future.

I'm also having problems with my Droid and my wifes 2010 Taurus Nav,SYNC. It only transfers the first letter contacts on the NAV, in other words if the button on the nav is ABC, it only transfers the A's from the Droid or DEF it only transfers the D's. Any one have a fix for this???

Thanks,

LeeU

HaHaHaHa..... You'll laugh too when you hear the answer.

OK, this has happened before several times to many on the forums. It also got me at first too.

Your phone numbers are probably transferring just fine. It's just that the phone list interface in the SYNC system is pretty screwy.

Here's the magic secret on how you get from the "A"s to the "B"s. Hit the ABC key one more time.

Now, guess how you get to the "C"s?

WOW!!! I'm kind of dumb as it worked like you said, thanks for the fix. I guess I need to go and read the NAV instructions.

Thank You!!

Don't feel dumb, it gets everyone. The method is very different from most interfaces and not at all intuitive until you know the trick.

It's also funny in that you'd automatically figure it out if you ever hit the same button a second time, but oddly, nobody ever does.

I did the same thing. Thought most of my contacts weren't downloaded to Sync. It was my computer illiterate husband that suggested I touch the ACB button again, for B and again for C, etc

No Verizon phones work with the text messaging feature :( I'm plenty mad about it!

mallie

No text support on the T-Mobile 3G My touch either. Must be a Google vs. Microsoft thing.

What's even more crazy, while looking through my SYNC music list of artists on my Nav screen recently, I noted the ABC key will list all of the ABCs (like you would expect), not just A or B or C.

And this is within the same SYNC interface! Some engineers somewhere needs some schooling.

I would keep an eye on your data usage guys. Especially if it's Verizon. I know their "unlimited data plan" actually caps at 5 GB a month, then you get socked on a per MB basis. That may seem like a lot, but 5 GB can go fast if you use it all the time.
