Who provides the SYNC 3 Navigation and how would one report errors

Recommended Posts

I purchased my 2017 Escape in May and would have expected the Navigation system to be reasonably up-to-date. However, when it comes to some of the roads in my area, what is being shown is up to three years out of date. FWIW, both Google and Garmin have the corrects data.

Any idea of who provides the mapping for SYNC 3 Navigation and where I might go report errors?

I think what Pinebear is talking about is the Map data is out of date, which is not surprising. Most manufactures are 2 - 3 years behind current map data. So here is my understanding, most mapping data is generated by a mapping companies, then the company that makes the Navigation software buys the data from the mapping company and coverts the data to match the format for their software, then probably the auto manufacture buys the latest update to install in there product line. So as I have experienced every built in automotive navigation software I have used since 2006 has always been out of date, even when I purchased map updates, the maps were still a couple of years old.

Where as you look at something like google maps or WAZE, they are all cloud based, so not only do they see when a "new road" opens and people start driving on it. But they are also probably getting feeds from the mapping company on a regular basis (monthly?weekly?).

To me it is just one of those down sides of built in Navigation software.

I have also read that this is why many manufactures are dragging their feet on getting Android Auto/CarPlay working because they are afraid that drivers will use the navigation on there phone instead of the built in navigation....

As to answer Pinebear original question, I guess you could complain to Ford, but truthfully I think that would be like pushing a rope uphill... :)

Navigation Information comes from SirrusXM Traffic Services you'd have to contact them about incorrect maps, also just incase people don't know we only get 5 years of free navigation with our new cars, after that its like $150 a year for the service.

I am not sure this is correct. As I understand, the navigation comes from Ford (or subcontractor). Updates when available are or will be available for purchase for a fixed fee. I believe what you are referring to is the Sirius traffic service. I have this service free for five years for my 2013 Ford Escape Titanium. After that, I understand that I will need to pay a feel for the subscription. That service is no where near the amount that you state for my 2013 Escape.

I purchased a 2017 Ford Edge Titanium with Navigation on 7/19/2017 and found that the map data is 1.5-2 years old. I have a 2014 Ford Taurus with Navigation and the A6 map SD card came out in 2015 and is missing the new intersection here in Charlotte, NC (Johnston Rd at i485). Last year I purchased the A7 map update and it contains the new intersection. There is now a A8 update for purchase. I understand that the new Sync3 is still updated? from the same map vendor. It should be at least equal to the A7 map update of the Sync2 system. Ford brags about this new Sync3 as being so much better than the Sync2 but so far I don't see it as better at least not for Navigation. No where on-line can I find anything about updates for the Sync3 Navigation its like Ford doesn't care that they sell you a car with a $900 Navigation system that is 2 years old when you get it. Sure we can use Apple Car Play but that eats up your data plan, doesn't work in areas where you can't get cell signal (Think PA mountains) plus we payed $900 extra for the option that's lumped with other options and it doesn't work.

Does anybody know of a site that Ford actually responses too? I've been trying to find out how and when the map data for Sync3 Navigation gets updated. No one from Ford will answer this question in their on-line chats or any other forum I could find. It's like Ford came out with this Sync3 two years ago and they still don't know how to update the maps. At least Sync2 MFT has updates that come out once a year even though the price for them is way to high. I found on-line that updates for Africa and Australia are free for 5 years but nothing about the USA.

Officially the site for updates is: http://ford.navigation.com/home/en_US/FordNA/USD

However, they do not show the 2017 Esacape and if I look for 2016, it says I have the latest and greatest.

I've basically given up on them and display Google Maps from my phone on the Sync 3 display when I am in need of Nav.

That site doesn't show anything for the Sync 3 vehicles, just the Sync 2. Ford sends you to that site but it's useless. The Sync 3 has been out for 2 years now and no one that I contact at Ford can tell me when or even how the outdated Navigation maps will be updated. So much for their new and improved Sync 3, at least with my Sync 2 MFT in my 2014 Ford Taurus Limited I know where to purchase map updates, even though they are way to costly.

I talked with the sales manager here in South Carolina and he called Ford. They told him that an update for the maps would be out sometime in March, he said they were very vague about when exactly and how. He also said that he had 2 other customers ask him the same question within the last week. Hope Ford follows thru and comes up with an upgrade.

Ask your local ford dealer if they know about VJJ5Z19H449A

Must provide VIN#

Must provide ESN serial----> Settings, about sync

not first ESN #, scroll down to end might be something like vv_ _ _ _ _ _

Cost $150.00

Map update from 1 15-> to 1 16

Comes on thumb drive and installation takes about 40-45 minutes

thats for CAN/USA/Mex not UK, (NA is 1.16, EU is F6 most recent) they have their own way of getting maps..most unofficial ones can be downloaded easily into EU versions

install time is 70 mins

1.14 also included in the list not just 1.15.

...I remain stunned by what the dealerships don't know...

I'm trying to get my NAV updated, after updating SYNC on my own Wednesday night.

First they told me there's an SD card. No...there's not.
Then they told me it it updates over WI-Fi. No, it doesn't.
Then it was, You have to reach out to HERE at www.navigation.com/sync. Nope, they say to call the dealership.
Then it was, "You have the latest version of SYNC, it's in there.". No, it's not.
Then it was, "You have the latest version." No, I have the 2014, there's a 2016.

"OK, I'll dig around some more and call you back."

...this is why I do things myself...

They finally called back, finally on this path:

...so now I have to call them back Monday with the SYNC Serial Number (ESN)...

It's been a week and I feel like I'm doing all the work for them.

Received my NAV update USB stick today. Got home, started the grill, started the Edge, plugged in the thumb drive and let 'er go.

Cooked 8 burgers, sat down and ate, and went out to the Edge to check on things...smooth as a baby's bottom.

Did a quick test drive around the area to check out the update; the annoying "Uncharted Area" or whateverthehellitwas was message is gone and everything is looking good.

Listened to Grace Potter's "The Lion The Beast The Beat" while I drove around...mission accomplished...

So, I was able to get my 2016 Edge Titanium (Sync3 Nav) updated to v3.0, and played the games the dealers in Dallas like to play with their lack of knowledge. Finally found Five Star Ford of Plano has a parts guy that was pretty savvy in finding what I needed for the nav data update. I was the first customer he worked with on this specific update. Picked up the USB nav update today and got it installed; took about 25 min with the CarPlay/AA USB hub.

My biggest concern was the issue that NA 1.14 had where the software would refuse to navigate you on any toll road - no matter the setting and very annoying. If youve noticed this, too, youll be happy to learn that I tested this after the NA 1.16 update and this issue has been fixed. Im now able to navigate on toll roads and Sirius XM traffic also looks cleaner.

Same experience for me. I didn't realize NA 1 14 didn't work for any toll road, but it definitely did not want to route across the one toll bridge I use around here semi-regularly. The NA 1 16 update, while still a couple years old, now works as expected and will now give me the fastest route.

These are the files that were in the SyncMyRide directory on the USB stick I bought:

2017-09-29 10:05 AM 26,897 HB5T-14G386-TAB.tar.gz
2017-09-29 10:15 AM 848,463,374 JL7T-14G423-CA.tar.gz
2017-09-29 11:53 AM 8,665,937,837 JR3T-14G421-CB.tar.gz
2017-09-29 10:44 AM 2,390,528,284 JR3T-14G422-CD.tar.gz
2018-04-09 12:58 PM 1,755 JR3T-14G424-CB.TAR.GZ
The last file is the license file that contains your ESN number. It's a 16 GB USB stick.
