Synce update freezes at Play Menu stage

Recommended Posts

To the brain trust that is the SYNC Forum. I just bought a 2013 F150 with the basic sync model. I downloaded the update to a USB, but when I follow the instructions to upload it into the truck, I plug the USB in, press AUX until SYNC Line in shows, press OK, press Menu, SYCN Media displays, press OK, Media Menu appears for a couple seconds, then Plan Menu appears and that's where everything stops.

Any ideas why, or how I can update the system? Ford says the system hasn't been upgraded since 2012.

Thanks, Steve

Hi Steve,

I'm just the person to help. Try the following method for starting the update. It is a little different than what is posted on the site.

1. Press the Phone Button. You will either see PHONE MENU then PHONE REDIAL or CONNECTING.
1a. If you see CONNECTING, scroll to RETURN and press OK.
1b. If you see PHONE MENU then PHONE REDIAL, scroll to SYSTEM SETTINGS and press OK.
2. Scroll to ADVANCED and press OK.
3. Scroll to INSTALL APPLICATIONS and press OK.
4. INSTALL APPLICATIONS? will appear. Press OK.
Let me know if this works.

I tried to update my 2014 Fusion Hybrid SE (with the basic SYNC system), today. I had a similar problem as the OP but was able to get past the PLAY MENU stage and managed to get to USB selected. From that point results varied to nothing happening to getting a verbal warning about the USB not containing playable media. Several attempts were made starting and restarting the process and reseating the USB drive. Also tried going directly to Install Applications through the advanced menu but got a verbal warning that there were no application files found in the root directory (or something to that effect). The drive seems to be detected since I could get a USB Removed message when I pulled it out. All the decompressed files are there in the root directory and the drive is formatted FAT32. Is this process sensitive to the brand of the USB drive?

You need to be informed of one thing. SYNC 4.4 is FLAWED. DO NOT UPDATE to 4.4 unless you want to spend time trying to pair your phone multiple times, want to put up with SYNC not recognizing your voice commands, SYNC dialing extra numbers when you tell it to dial, SYNC freezing when you try to get it to dial someone, your playback settings not being saved, and the vehicle ringing tone sounding one or two more times after you answer a call. All of these issues and others have been WELL DOCUMENTED in this forum and others. Read before you attempt to install an upgrade to SYNC. Leave it alone until SYNC 4.6 get released sometime before your vehicle ends up in a junk yard.
