I don't see any reason why the microphone couldn't be installed in a 2010. Just that I'm sure Ford won't cover it under warranty.

The tech agrees... just that I'd pay for the labor and parts. He suggests I just wait and check later, when the TSBs are updated for 2010.

Irritating, though...

Why would we have the microphone installed? The 2010's don't have an issue.

All of the people that I know that had any problems it was because either they were using the system wrong, or they were on Verizon (which had an issue).

I have a 2010 and have an issue....

I have the same identical issue of over-riding ambient noise as the older Fusions. I have the same mirror as an '09 Fusion with the microphone mounted on top. I have version 3.0 of Sync.

When folks say, "We can't understand you" due to the ambient noise from road sounds, etc., then there is a problem.

Define "ambient noise"?

How do you know that? There are 3 mirrors used on the Fusion/Milan, so you may not have the "same" mirror... I'm not saying you don't have a problem, I'm saying it doesn't have to be what you think it is....

Easy guys. We're all here for the same reason. To help and share Sync info.

M.P. What Verizon issue are you refering to? I have a Verizon phone and it works great once I got the new microphone installed. I suspect the difference in the 3 mirrors is related to the review camera and whether you have a NAV system installed. I doubt they changed the microphone but I could be wrong.

It was late last year so I don't know if they've addressed it yet or not. Verizon had an issue with SYNC. I remember giving details about it to someone using Verizon last year so you may have to use the search function. I think it had to do with volume and the phonebook. Probably contact your dealer for more info, that's where I first learned about it :) If yours works great then I wouldn't worry about it...

Hello. I am new here and need to find an intro section. But my dad just bought a fusion hybrid. A 2010 model. I am trying to found out everything about it. But I saw these messages and am wondering the same thing. We have to pull over to use the phone because people can't hear us too good because of all the road noise roar. Our mirror looks just like the one in all the pictures with a microphone round plastic thing on the top of the mirror's plastic border. It faces the windshield glass.

Welcome aboard, Jesse.... In spite of the exchange a few messages back... I would suggest having your dad take the car in to make sure the latest software update has been done to the Microsoft Sync system. One of the upgrade fixes addresses road noise issues, somewhat.

I would also try to see if the service manager would go for a hardware warranty upgrade on the microphone. I guess the car is brand new? Dealers usually jump through the hurdle a bit on a new car with a problem that is apparent to the driver within a short period of time. Wouldn't hurt.

Hi all. Great forum with great information here. I am new so please forgive my posting errors. I read through the entire post and this seems to be exactly what is happening to my recently purchased, used 2009 F-150 XLT with Sync. Apparently the previous owner did not use Sync much because they did not have the microphone upgrade kit installed. My question is whether or not the installation can be done at home? The local dealer wants $500+ to do it because my vehicle is out of the 3yr/36K warranty. It has 38K miles on it. It did come with a Ford ESP warranty, but only the Extra Care plan so it does not cover the Sync system. I have a dealer back in my home town who said they could order part # 8T4Z19A391A for me and ship it to me, but it is too far for me to drive to have them do the install there since I have moved away. I am pretty technically savvy and have installed many aftermarket components on vehicles over the years and don't see how this could be too difficult to install myself, unless of course it requires the computer to be flashed after the install which would have to be done by the dealer. Just wondering if anyone has tried to install 8T4Z19A391A themselves and how successful you have been. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. BTW, there is not another ford dealer located within 150 miles that I could even think about contacting to see if I could get a better price on the dealer installed option.

I can tell you that I had a dealer do my 08 Taurus X and they had complications.

The interior lights weren't working properly so they had for an extra day, and then I realized that the rear-view mirror stopped dimming. I'm not 100% sure they broke it, but I believe that to be the cause. Finally got that fixed, but they cracked the compass module that mounts under the mirror. They are supposed to mail me one.

Good luck if you try it and let us know how it goes.

I had a similar experience with my Taurus X at the dealer, and worse. The new microphone helped tremendously. But at first the interior lights and many other little things weren't working so I had to take three extra trips to the dealer to fix all the little problems they caused when fixing the microphone.

After a couple of visits, they found a (24-pin?) connector wasn't inserted back correctly. But still other little things stopped working. Then they kept finding other little fixes like blown fuses and such. They finally got it fixed after way too many visits. It might have been easy if they knew exactly what they were doing. But I think this install was new to them.

My question is whether or not the installation can be done at home?

Since you've installed aftermarket products then I would say yes. I'm not sure if it was this thread or another one, but I posted the dealer PDF from the Ford service manual which gave step by step directions. You should also be able to google them. Even if you didn't have directions I don't see how hard it would be because a mic is just a positive and negative connection and the rest is just mounting. If would get the part first, they may even come with some directions. You should be able to order the part online.

Is there a different TSB for 2010 models?

No, as of three weeks ago from mid-March.

Dealer will punch up your VIN, and a listing of updates and bulletins will display for that VIN number. The microphone upgrade is not listed. The tech I used, FWIW, claims he has received about as many complaints with the VIN numbers with no microphone upgrade listing, as the ones which do. He might have just been trying to pacify me, I dunno.

well, I finally broke down and took it to a dealer (in another town because the one here where I live can't spell FORD, let alone do a semi-complicated install). To say the least, having the microphone installed has made a huge difference. I can actually use the hands free features now when i'm travelling without having to pull over to the side of the road like i used to have to do. the install cost about $400 bucks but the dealer i originally purchased my truck from is picking up the tab for me so i would say, if you are having problems with the microphone (and can afford the cost if you're not under the 3yr/36k bumper to bumper warrenty), the tsb to install the new microphone kit is well worth it.

as a side note, the microphone is not that big and is fairly unnoticeable next to the overhead map light console. also, there IS a new tsb for the microphone upgrade kit. it is 10-4-something, i think, but am not completely sure of the new tsb number.

That is interesting. "The following procedure involves updating the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) software level and installing an external alternate SYNC microphone attached to the headliner.".

I'm guessing the APIM software level would be 2.0 or 2.1 so anyone who still has 1.3 should get their upgade for free under this TSB.

That is what I thought too, but apparently there is a line in this TSB that states if the APIM is updated to 2.x OR if it is 1.3 with the current version of 1.3, then they do not update it to 2.x. I now have to take it back to have the update to 2.1 done. They are telling me the update to 2.1 is only going to be a $29.99 charge because it is a real quick (i'll believe it's quick when i see it) update.

Go over to owner to Owner forum section of syncmyride.com and look at the "Road Noise" thread currently active in the Mobile Phones category. This link might work:

http://boards.synccommunity.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?tsn=15&nav=messages&webtag=fordsyncmb&tid=1311

The SYNC engineers are finally talking on the threads, and engineer Mike said there's a TSB to improve the microphone quality by moving it from the mirror to the roof by the lights. For this SYNC Microphone upgrade kit ask your dealer for part number 8T4Z19A391A

More information from the syncmyride thread:

The Ford SYNC Team has acknowledged this customer concern. Some future Ford products will implement a new microphone design and location. For current customers, we recommend that you insure you have updated to the latest available software, as we have made improvements to the Noise Suppression Algorithms in the software. Also, we recently released a Microphone Service Kit to address the Call Sound Quality concerns at highway speeds, which will relocate the microphone. Please visit your local Dealer for details.

This may work for me also, thank you!

As an additional FYI, I had the microphone upgrade done about a year ago on my Fusion. After about four months it stopped working. When I went back to the dealer I found out that there was a batch of faulty microphones from the supplier. I have had a second one installed and as of now ( six months later) it is still working properly.

Strange. I have an 08 Focus SE, with the mirror mounted microphone. Living in montana, we have the weirdest weather known to man. I have had NO issues with sync recognizing my voice. Driving at 80MPH on the highway, tons of wind noise, sync can still understand what i want extremely fast. Maybe it was a fluke for the other microphones, but I know mine works very well.

I know this is an old topic but wanted to add to it. First I can not understand all the install problems people had with the dealers installing this literally it is 5 wires. That's it.

Anyway my repair kit stopped working and is out of warranty so I reconnected the mirror mike.

The access to do this is under the drivers side A-Pillar. Just disconnected 3 wires that dealer spliced in and reconnected the 3 the delear cut and taped off. Left the other two alone.

That's it done.
