SYNC software version 2

Recommended Posts

In all fairness, although I'm pretty disappointed in this SYNC implementation software, I think Ford is using Microsoft software. It's further complicated by the fact that other factions are involved including those who programmed your cellphone and media device and what functionality they provide to the SYNC. E.g., I have an iPhone4 with 'issues' but some of them are because the iPhone, designed and supported by APPLE, has a reduced capability with Bluetooth. Meanwhile, Ford is really caught in the middle when the customer complains. That's not to say Ford is in any way blameless, only that they are not the only player.

I'm actually quite pleased with my 2011 Edge SEL but the SYNC is driving me crazy. I mean, it DOES control a lot of funtionality of the vehicle and its deployment has been less than satisfactory, so in that regard Ford did drop the ball. Sometimes I really wonder whether a scenario in which, for example, Ford, Apple, and Microsoft have to get along can ever happen. And, I wonder how many times I'll have to pull over my Edge and "reboot" it. And, the talk of the end user having to "pull the fuse" is absolutely unacceptable.

Just my 2 cents.

If it helps, I haven't had to reboot / pull the fuse once since the update... Works without issue and starts up in the morning without hesitation, which I certainly could not say before... Of course, many things aren't working any longer so it is probably easier for the system to do this miracle of starting up :-/

Since the upgrade, I'm missing the Sync apps ("turn-by-turn directions", "vehicle health report"), but everything else is working well, better than before. So, I'm going to hang back for a bit, wait till they have the Sync application issue figured out, then bring the vehicle in. Since everything else is working great, I don't want to take a chance of taking a step back with everything.

Keep in mind, this is a FORD. FORD should manage the support issues regardless of the origin. It was/is FORD's responsibility to sell a vehicle that works.

Not saying this is the solution but, AT&T handles support of the iPhone pretty well. It's not an AT&T issue so they direct you to Apple support.

Ford Sync just throws up their hands and tells you to reboot.

I don't think FORD had any idea what they bit off when they moved into the PC/Software support arena.

Good luck, as long as you are going in with both eyes open and aware of what may happen. I knew I was taking a chance my being one of the first "beta" testers for the new upgrade so I was not totally surprised when it failed. Hopefully they can get the procedure working this next week. The Edge ain't much fun to drive without Sync and the other stuff it controls.

And I have pulled fuse 29 and damn these new low profile fuses, I dropped mine behind the lower cover when I was putting it back in and had to use the spare. The fuse panel is in a terrible position for quick access.

My hand is up about the fuse thing, I to dropped mine behind it but I went a step further and made sure the spare fell back there to, then I had to remove the kick panel and all

dumb place for a fuse box

Sitting here reading this and laughing at your pain. How did your remove the kick panel? I would like to retrieve the fuse, anal I know, but stuff like that bugs me. Yes the fuse panel was not well thought out. I love the location of the hood release cable!

The one thing that really bugs (besides the fact my Sync system is wiped out) is the fact that Ford or whoever does not have a way to backup and restore the existing system.

That is absolutely the dumbest thing I have seen in a long time. That would be like not keeping a backup of your data on a computer, sooner or later you are going to have a crash. It is not if it is when. I build computers as a hobby and I always playing with new stuff and have on several occasions wiped out my system. I keep a external hard drive next to my computer and do a complete backup at least once a week. Backing up the Sync could be done to a USB flash drive or the dealer could back it up to his system before starting the upgrade.

I really don't understand why they don't have a way to backup the system.

Ford's handling of this stuff has ROOKIE written all over it.

I had my MKX in last week to my dealer, Pacifico Marple Ford outside of Philadelphia. I was initially concerned when they had to keep it because of the website problems - couldn't access the upgrade. Then I started seeing these posts! I even called Ford and they contacted the dealer - it seems that the person on the phone from Sync was not knowledgable about the upgrade process, the tech at the dealership was right.

I picked up my car today with a bit of anxiety. I couldn't be happier. It seems that all of the problems I had been having (no Travel Link, problems with iPhone and BT) have been fixed!! Everything including Nav and the rear camera are fine. I think this is testimony to the competence of the guys at my dealership.

The ones that are lucky enough to get the complete update seem to be pleased with it. However there are several like me that the update does not complete and it completely wipes out the system. I guess that is what I get for trying to be one of the first to update, my system before was pretty well trouble free except for a few minor problems like the screen staying on when the doors were opened.

Hopefully Ford will get the problems worked out. I intend to call the dealer tomorrow and see what the status is. I think my dealer is fairly component but I know how internet connections can screw up things.

:shades: Turned in my 2011 Edge Limited last Monday night. Here it is Monday night a week later. "Still waiting". I was told that the technician at my dealer does not work week ends. I would think that this would be the best time to download from the internet / or late nights when there is less internet activity. I wonder if the Ford folks are really thinking and I certainly do not see a real sense of urgency. Like most I am probably just impatient like a kid waiting for Christmas morning.... (Probably when I get it back) .....Well, I guess going faster when your lost does not really help anything. I know if I hurry when I'm lost I just get "lost"......

:ohsnap: I think I got censored for mentioning the CA lemon law @syncmyhide.com. I hope we really don't have enough lemons to make lemonade.

. And by the way! Friends don't let Friends drink lemonade and drive.

Let's hope this gets fixed.

Not really worried about a "reasonable" amount of time to fix it....... Let's .... Just do it right!

california-lemon-law.gifvrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrroooooommmmmm! FORD (Fix Or Reboot Daily)? Vrroooooom Vrrroooom (Hope Not!)

I Love My 2011 Ford Edge (I hope it aint a Lemon) if I ever get it back.

I had mine done yesterday. It was a nightmare from the getgo. When I got there, they said I had never made and appointment. They they said it would only take 40 minutes. After 2hrs 45 min they said that it was upgraded and there were no problems. They said it took so long because their internet was having problems.

First thing I noticed was there was no Sirius any more. Then no back up camera. Took it back and they kept looking for a setting to turn the B/U camera back on. Finally they told me to bring it back and they would get me a loaner.

Now I have:

No Backup Camera

No Sirius

No Heated Seats

No 911 assist

No Vehicle Health Report

And a new one that I haven't seen on here... when I press the lock on the remote, the lights flash but the doors do not.

So now I have to go and pick up the rental. whoo hooo... I bet it will be a little bitty Chevy.

Yes the fuse panel was not well thought out. I love the location of the hood release cable!

Besides the fact that the ongoing Sync issues bug me, the fuse panel location, along with the hood release cable blocking the top of the panel, and the lack of an easier way to reboot the system other than pulling the plug (so to speak) really bug me. :-)

-steve

p.s. I have not scheduled my update and haven't had to pull the fuse in almost 3 weeks now and the only issue I continue to have is slowness. I had a Nav card glitch and the rolling backup camera picture, but both problems went away this time without a fuse pull.

Man am I happy to read your post. I have been so scared by all these posts, I have been waiting to take my Edge into the dealership.

So, this update even fixed the Travel Link services? So, now you are subscribed to all the services including Showtimes and Fuel prices?

Are there some tips that can be passed along to insure a sucessful upgrade process? If so, please share.

Just got my 2011 Edge back and ....YAHOOOOO.... everything works as expected. I know I will jinx it here, but everything works better, faster, just what you should expect. I tested all the screens and the only issue I found was the color orb on the ambient lighting is off by two colors so if you pick the red, you get the color two orbs away. Not a big deal. I have read other posts that said they had a very slow response to even volume controls. I am happy to say that everthing is working much better than it did when new. Everything on my list of items that didn't work is fixed. After I have used this for a while, I will be looking for the Pandora software...

I'm with you on that one!! I can give you a huge list of items that are taught in Software Development Kindergarten, that Ford has completely dropped the ball on...or dropped on our balls. :P

As I mentioned in another thread, its all about the skill set and training. I'm certain this thing can be backed up, but does a dealership have the required hardware or knowledge...Doubtful! You also don't generally back anything up if your plan is a clean install anyway, they don't care about our "data". To them its saving the radio presets before pulling the battery. I've had a few TSB's on other cars that had instructions to do this, but I've always had to set them back up.

I'm also sure the service tech's were only taught the "user" commands, nothing higher admin related. Its Windows Embedded CE, its a true OS running MyTouch as an app and GUI. I'm still trying to find out if its running on the new CE 7 or not, but I can't find that info. (Update...just found it, its based on Windows CE 6 R2, so older, but not bad!)

I don't see it being too long before someone hacks it and we get it running xbox games or something useful, like being able to install a real GPS app like TomTom for CE :spiteful:

There was one time when my MFT was having a melt down when I saw flashed on the screen a Microsoft Windows (most likely CE) desktop while displaying a Windows message.

It was there a split second before system rebooted.

Good new! At least there is some light at the end of the tunnel. I talked to the Service Manager today and they are talking to Ford but I haven't heard back from them. They did admit that they have not been able to successfully complete an update yet. That bothers me as this is one of the biggest dealers in the area and has a good reputation for service and not trying to put the screws to you too bad.

I am also running into the same issues...unable to complete the download...2 weeks...2 days...and counting. They think tomorrow. I am not holding my breath! You would think Ford would have overnighted the update via USB Flash drive or something. This is crazy! LOL and the fun continues - it will work out...eventually!

I don't think it took very long because I dropped it off at noon and they called back at 4PM saying it was ready. The 'SYNC Guy' a the dealership was on vacation so he didn't even do it, it was a 'regular guy'. They didn't mention any problems getting it installed. Hopefully they will get this figured out!

It seems the dealership needs a 'SYNC Guy' who is computer savy enough to handle these issues. I know this is out of their normal job scope, but if Ford is going to add it to more and more vehicles, the dealership needs a SYNC go-to guy.

I can't wait to see the high score today! I just got off the phone with them....4th download attempt this week is currently underway....apparently quite the process....I wonder if they are downloading the patch at 300 baud!

Today is going to be the day! I can feel it!
