Phonebook/Contact Photos

Recommended Posts

I just purchased a 2011 Lincoln MKX. Love the ride..but SYNC (the new My Lincolntouch) is becoming very troublesome regarding uploading the Phonebook/Contact photos that are shown in all the Ford marketing materials (print media, TV etc.) and user manuals.

I contacted SYNC support and had a online chat. The conversation is below. I am not pleased.

Please wait for a Sync Agent to respond.

Thank you for contacting the Ford & Lincoln-Mercury Sync Support Center.

You are now chatting with 'Keith'

How may I assist you?

you: Keith, I would like to know how to get Sync to display my phonebook contact pictures. I have a 2011 Lic MKX?

Keith: That is a phone dependent feature.

you: i have sucessfully downloaded the phonebook

you: what has to be dependant

you: bluetooth?

Keith: Yes the phone must be capable of sending the photos to SYNC.

you: i can send contact photos via bluetooth all day

you: to my friends to my pc netbook etc.etc

you: i even send a contact to sync successfully

you: but did not see pic

Keith: Yes the phone's Bluetooth must be able to relay the pictures to SYNC.

you: how do i do that?

Keith: It would be automatic when the phone is paired.

you: so is there a list or spec that i can research to confirm that my phone has the capablity?

Keith: We have no test data at this time for phones with the new My Touch system ,we apologize for the inconvenience.

you: I have a Nexus One, also tried with coworkers Samsung Epic , neighbors iPhone 4 and a old Cliq

Keith: We have no test data for that phone with the new My Touch system.

Keith: Is there anything else I can assist you with today?

you: ok , so is bluetooth the only way to make that photo contact association? not usb?

Keith: Correct.

Keith: Is there anything else I can assist you with today?

you: i guess that's it unfortunatly

If anyone has successfully uploaded their phonebook photos and/or contact images please post here. I would like to know what phones are capable of this. Thanks.

I have been struggling with this for a few weeks after getting my new Edge... The documentation I have turned up is that it works well with Blackberries to do a Bluetooth protocol called MAP. I tried putting my photos on my address book on my Blackberry Curve and after sync had the phonebook? still no contact photos. What I can't figure out is that this is a such a nice feature to have, I don't see why developers haven't created a program for sending photos to your phonebook via USB or something. It shouldn't be rocket science and it shouldn't be this difficult to do. They could even add the ability to touch the photo in the phonebook and browse it via USB or CD just to make it easier for people....

I do hope somebody figures this out soon... or comes up with a Linux hack to replace the Sync system ;-)

You are correct that you need the MAP (Message Access Profile) for bluetooth. From what I've read, the phone carriers can't decide on a standard to push out photos and text messages etc. The SYNC system uses MAP, you can read some of the press releases on the FORD site talking about this.. RIM and Motorola are far ahead of both Apple and most of the google Android phones (sans Droid X) in terms of having this profile for Bluetooth. In terms of your Curve, I would be curious to know which specific model you have? RIM makes several models of the curve, not all have MAP after reviewing their specs.

From what I can tell, these are the versions that support MAP - 9330 (Sprint) and 9300. These were also upgraded recently to OS 6.0

The other models of curves don't list MAP in the tech specs - 8900 and 8500 (at least based on the RIM site). If these were upgraded to 6.0, perhaps they support it now, but not sure.

I'm in a similar boat, really want the full functionality to work through SYNC system on 2011 Explorer. At this point, I'm looking to get a new phone. I like the Android phones for everything else they do, but most don't support Bluetooth MAP. So the tradeoff is to go with an Android 4G phone, with better apps and internet and possibly use an app like vLingo as a workaround while in my car (someone posted that elsewhere in the forum) or run with a BB Curve 9330 that doesn't have all the cool features but will SYNC up with my car (and wait for Google Android or Apple to get their act together).

Same here Evo 4G.....no pic's, no text it does sux. do you think there will ever be an update/ fix available ?.

Besides that all other interactions between evo and sync / mft have been flawless.

I dont get why SYNC would roll out features that are only functioning with a couple phones.

iphone (consumer) and Blackberry (business) together make up the largest smartphone market share so the fact these two devices don't work 100% with MFT is very poor system design IMO.

It is not Ford fault that your phone does not have the correct protocol to share the pic, I can blame Ford for many things on the system, but not this, you should contact your phone manufacturer and ask him to add the correct protocol to the phone.

It does work. You have to have the pics on the phoone locally. After you have assigned the pics to the contact, you have to manually add each contact to the phonebook. Worked like a charm on my new Explorer.

I have a 2011 Explorer with MFT and I would like to manually add the contact photos as you suggest but I dont understand what you mean by manually?

Connect the phone through SYNC USB port and do what exactly?

When you open SYNC phonebook I dont see where you can manually add anything.

First, I purchased a new phone HTC EVO Shift. I have only lost the pairing twice since adding the phone. I can no longer view text messages on the MLT, but I can now view my photos from my contacts. Instead of downloading the phonebook from the telephone, I send individual contacts to SYNC. By doing this, the photos were sent as well. I did not connect my phone to the SYNC USB, but I did turn off the automatic phonebook download feature.

Thanks for replying.

I'm going to have to call my cell phone provider. I did everything you said (very easy), but the phone doesn't locate the bluetooth device to send it to. Thanks for trying.

I do believe your phone has Bluetooth capabilities. You have to pair the device with Sync.
