Why not available?

Recommended Posts

I recently purchased a 2011 Ford Edge with Snyc. I was told there was navigation in the vehicle. There is, but the system is the Turn by Turn and not the GPS with maps I thought it was equiped with. I have spoken to the dealer who thought Ford Motor Co. was working on a resolution, and also, I have called Ford directly only to be told it is not an upgrade or add on for my car! My system can give me sports scores, my horoscope, etc, but not GPS navigation. I am not HAPPY to say the least. We are planning on making this an issue and if it takes having them order me a new car...if in fact they can't install GPS in my car...then so be it. I have been getting the answer that this is a system that needs to be factory installed, but if I have the computer in my car already, why ... and no one can explain this to my satisfaction...can't the system just be upgraded? Anyone else out there with the same problem?

Anything but can be upgraded, it just deals with the cost. There is obviously the GPS receiver that is missing and there could be wiring issues in adding it after the fact. Why didn't you check it out during the test drive?

Update:

What does the window sticker say?

AFAIK, it's a factory only option. The turn by turn stuff is just a phone based service. It should be pretty clear when doing the research that the NAV system is an available option. At least I had no problem making it clear to my salesguy that I wanted to make sure I got a vehicle with it installed.

I am as frustrated as you, as I am almost in the similar situation. '11 Edges are very sparse in Western Canada and I didn't want to wait 3 months for a factory order. I did get an Edge with MyFord Touch with SYNC (8' screen, SD card reader, USB etc) they had in stock but didn't have a Voice Activated Nav Option. From what I researched on the web (press releases, reviews, etc), it was implied that to upgrade it was simply paying $795 for an SD card that would load app into SYNC and read the maps and POI off the SD card.

After two weeks of not getting a straight answer, someone at Ford Customer Service in the US, told me the same answer you received that it is a factory installed option only. I can not simply believe that it is a totally different radio just to have a NAV option. My edge has a GPS receiver because I can say "Where am I?" and it displays GPS coordinates on the Information Screen. The software versions displays the various versions of software it is currently running including NAV maps (which is blank because I don't have the NAV SD card plugged in).

At least you have access to SYNC TDI services, which I thought was available in Canada but after getting the vehicle, i found out the hard way that this was not the case.

I am sure down the road, the SD card can be purchased as an accessory for our 2011s when the 2012 Edge comes out next year ;)

My Suggestion would be to see if you can find someone in your area with the SD Card and test it out in your Edge, even ask the dealer to do it. I'm fairly certain that is all it is. If it works fine, then you can just bug Ford to get you the card as you'll then know its that simple. This is new to them, so they may not know any better. You could even try contacting TelNav directly for the SD. Give it a few months and you may even be able to find them on Ebay. There is a chance that the Nav SD may only authenticate to the first car is it plugged into though.

Good Luck!

That was my thought also but using someone SD card that has the NAV option and seeing what would happen. But there is probably some security to prevent you from copying the SD card and somehow tied to the original VIN.

I also called TeleNav after the Ford Canada CSR was authorized to give me the # to call and told me I should be able to order SD card directly from them. Unfortunately, she give me the # for Navteq. I have a ticket open with TeleNav, but they want to conference in a dealer so they can escalate the ticket. Now I am on the hunt for a co-operative dealer. Most of the dealers (service or parts dept) in Calgary either never called me back or told me it would be a $4k upgrade. I think the other problem is their no part # for it in the system. So they are keeping mum about it.

Maybe the next major update (1.4) will provide a way to just buy the SD card and authorized it the same way you do with Sirius using an authorization code.

Who knows

Thanks for the wishes

I have a 2011 Edge as well and was told the same thing, it was only a voice turn by turn system. But I havent heard it yet because it hasn't worked since I bought it 2 weeks ago. I have had it to 2 different dealers. They work on it and then tell me it is a Ford issuse. Why are they trying to work on something they don't have a fix for yet? I can't be the only 2011 owner out there that has this issue and they can't tell me dealerships haven't seen it yet. So I wait.

I was told at the dealer that all future Fords, like the 2011 Edge (except for the base models) will come with the touchscreen but you will have to add the option for map-based navigation by purchasing the SD card.

Not sure if he was accurate, but he told me the SD card upgrade would run about 700 bucks if you wanted it.

I'm sure theres a way to add it after the vehicle was purchased, but maybe not all the wrinkles have been ironed out as to how a dealer can order one.

Here's a press release from Ford that says nav is standard - Nav Standard

Has anyone come across an SD card and tried it to see if it works?

It seems the issue with the Edge SD card-based nav system is indeed odd. We ordered our 2011 Edge Limited in October and it arrived during the 1st week of December. We had specifically ordered the sunroof but never for a moment considered a nav system as I already have a Garmin. Here is the wording from the window sticker:

" OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT:

CANADIAN TOURING PACKAGE $2,550.00

. PANORAMIC ROOF

. VOICE ACTIVATED NAVIGATION SY_

CANADIAN TOURING PKG DISC - $700.00

When we arrived to pick up our Edge the salesman was just inserting the sd card and explained that was the nav system. Apparently that option was included in the CTPkg. Seems odd to me. I think you should find someone with nav card and give it a try. BTW although I have not used the nav system it is rather neat to drive along and have street names displayed on the smaller right hand screen and on the main screen.

From the press release:

SD card navigation, supplied by TeleNav, will be available as an option for the MyFord Touch system, activated by inserting the SD card in to the systems built-in Media Hub. The SD card will contain the map database and voice data, 3D map graphics and enhanced point-of-interest (POI) information from Wcities.

My understanding is that the SD card works only in the vehicle that it originally came with.

This would make sense considering that it is a ~$700 option (i.e. to discourage theft or copying).

I got a 2011 Ford Edge limited with MyFord touch. It came with the Telenav Maps SD card but the Navigation was not installed or provision on my touch system. On the invoice it did not mention navigation anywhere.

But I am getting mixed information from the dealers and from ford and sync.

They say it is not installed and it has to be installed in the factory.

I find that hard to believe as a software developer. And the fact that is was in my glovebox when I got it. I would pay to have it installed but this seems like a no brain bad policy for handling the situation.

Consider yourselves lucky. The Ford nav system in my 2011 Edge Limited is an annoyance, not an asset. Use the money you saved to buy a good Garmin or Tom-Tom unit.

We need someone who is a programmer to figure out how to load a different mapping application onto another SD card and get it to work in SYNC/MFT.

Then we can all dump TeleNav.

Has anyone actually put the SD card in a PC card reader and looked to see if it can even be read, and if so, what is on it?

Have you found a solution to this problem? I just purchased a 2008 & also would like to have a nav unit in my car. The salesman tried to sell me on the turn by turn option that the sync has but I also like the maps. I am wondering is there a way to keep the sync but also have a nav unit. If you found a solution I would appreciate your help.

Ian,

Not missing anything, that I know of. "Traffic" works now, as well as all the other SIRIUS services. I was trying to retain the "Traffic" without renewing the radio stations, as they offer no channels that I have any interest in. I also have a "flash drive" with almost all my recordings that I do like.

Just want Traffic, and occasionally weather.
