SYNC3 and APIM reprogramming

Recommended Posts

Updated my 2016 Escape's SYNC3 to 3.0v20204. Still having issues with cam works sometimes and not others. Found TSB 21-2175 on reprogram of the APIM module. I used to be a Ford service writer so I understand a lot of this. It says once the tech downloads to USB it is used on any vehicle needing it. Plug usb in and let it work. About 30 minutes. don't have to babysit, watch or scan. when finished return to owner. My question is was the APIM update not in the SYNC3 update? And second why are my local dealers saying 1 to 3 hours depending on net speed...it's USB based. We talking a month out to do this. So is the APIM update different? Thanks

Hi MC and welcome to the Ford SYNC Forum. No...A SYNC software version update (i.e. 3.0v20204) is not the same as an APIM firmware update. A SYNC 3 software update would not address an APIM reprogramming and/or rear facing camera issue (assuming that is what you mean by "cam").

You either need an APIM update or an APIM replacement. However, that is difficult to diagnose over the Internet.

As to the labor time? I have no guess why they are telling you 1-3 hours. Don't know if that is the "book" time or they are guessing.

Keep us updated and good luck.

The time is probably what they are charging.... being that you already did work as a service writer, you should have known this....

When they talk about 'net speed', I'm sure they need to download it themselves... so it depends on how fast their network is...  ?

yes the USB part is fast, but it takes time to get the file(s)
