FordF150Sport
Hi all, I recently bought a 2016 F-150 with Sync 3 with Navigation. I'm trying to update Sync3 - however, and here's the rub - the truck didn't come with navigation originally. It was added by the previous owner. When I go to owner.ford's website for the update files, the files I download are obviously VIN specific, so it gives me the files to update Sync 3 without navigation. When I plug my USB drive into the port in my truck, an error pops up and says the files are for non-nav vehicles, which my truck used to be. I need to be pointed in the right direction on how to get the files that update Sync 3 with navigation. I spoke with 3 dealers in my area, and only one is willing to even attempt to update my system. The other 2 wanted nothing to do with this. I spoke with Ford's IVT team several times, and they said it shouldn't be a problem for a dealer to update the system, but now I'm nervous that a dealer CAN'T do it and I'm going to be billed for tech time regardless. Any help at all is very much appreciated. I'm just spinning in circles on this. Multitask
You will need to see if the previous owner can tell you the VIN it came from..... OR... you will need to find a VIN from a unit that is as close as you can , and enter that are your current VIN.... It should allow for any 3.0 updates then... e.g. 2015 F150 that came with nav would be a good start. ? Because Ford asks for the ESN and the VIN from the old vehicle, you will never get to update the maps... use CarPlay or Android Auto instead, more up to date anyways. ? The VIN listed in the head unit matches the VIN of the truck. If I use another VIN inside the owner website, would that affect someone else's vehicle if they need to do an update? If you use another VIN to download the latest SYNC 3 update, install it and report the installation, the real owner will not be able to receive that update. And if they updated already and reported the installation, you will not be able to receive that latest update. That is one of the problems with this method. It is nice of you to be one of the few people I have seen actually worry about what happens to the real owner of the vehicle after a VIN is hijacked like this. Good luck. Not if you get one from a wrecked vehicle... obviously they won't need it anymore

In my defense: FordF150 specifically asked about obtaining VINS from the Ford Owners website. And a wrecked vehicle sitting in a salvage yard does not have an owner (other than the salvage yard). And a salvage yard will not be updating SYNC. I kind of considered that to be obvious. My mistake. ? In case it is not clear, I am joking. ? FordF150Sport
Thank you to you both for your inputs! Maybe that's what I'll do, just find a VIN from a truck at a salvage yard and use that to update my sync. I don't want to mess anything up that someone else will need. Unless someone has any ideas on how to update the maps, I think Multitask is right - I doubt I'll be able to update the maps.
Multitask
My 2018 FFH did not come with NAV, so when I updated it to NAV (hardware), I got the updates for NAV via a VIN from a 2019 Mustang.... and kept it up to date that way... I was able to update Sync 3 to v3.0, but the maps aren’t updated. You were able to update your maps to current version?
Multitask
Maps are not part of the 3.0 version, they are separate, and I'm on 1-18 , Ford was/is offering them free with 2018plus, and charge for them 2017less https://syncnavigation.com/ford/home
