Ben Haberek
I just bought a 2017 Ford Edge Titanium last week. I have an Ipod 160gb Classic that worked fine in my 2011 Edge, with few problems. Occasionally it would lock up and need to be rebooted and it would take a while to index when I swapped out songs, but I expected that with 13000+ tracks. I found that the more songs I had, the more frequent the issues, so I avoided filling up the Ipod completely and always left room. I was very excited to find that things worked fine in my new Edge for a few days. I could even do voice command searches without issue. I thought I would delete some of the tracks from the Ipod to make sure everything continued to run smoothly. What a mistake. Now, when I connect the Ipod, Sync tries to index it, but locks up after a few minutes and reboots the ipod, forcing the index to restart. This process repeats continuously over and over. I've tried listening to songs on the Ipod while it's indexing and I can get through two tracks if I'm lucky before the ipod freezes and needs to be rebooted manually. It's to the point, after less than a week, that the ipod is pretty much unusable. I know the ipod is old, but I still find it hard to accept that backward compatibility is such a problem. I've heard that a master reset of the Sync 3 may help. I know it would delete my presets, but would that delete any system updates as well? I've also heard transferring the ipod files to a USB works, but what sort of functionality would I lose if I did this? Thanks, Ben

You also could try renaming the iPod and see if that will solve. I use a classic in my 2016 Escape with Sync 3. Like you it does not work as well as on my 2013 Escape with MFT. I have found that verbal commands are next to useless. I try and use the dashboard for controlling and usually use the "play all" command. I get the occasional lock like you. Sometimes simply unplugging and re-plugging will work. Less frequently I need to do a "reset" on the iPod classic. Good luck.

Ben Haberek
Unfortunately two master resets today have not seemed to solve the problem. The ipod still locase up after a song or two & then sync tries to re-index when I reboot it. Edited March 1, 2017 by Ben Haberek
tjeeper46
We struggled with all these same problems, with both iPod classics we own. Both work very well in our truck with MFT, both fail in these same ways in our Sync 3 Edge. We have had the Edge in for service for this issue numerous times over 7 months of the past year. I also have tested our iPods with the new rev 2.2 release. Same problems. There are other threads and many other owners with the same. What we have done is transfer all our music to a usb thumb drive (11000+ tracks). There is a thread here on how to export and modify playlists to make them work. So far, we are getting reliable operation from the usb thumb drive, on the Sync 3 Edge, and in our MFT truck, including voice control. And, it frees up our classics for portable use. The ipod still locase up after a song or two & then sync tries to re-index when I reboot it. When the Classic locks do you need to do an iPod reset to get it unlocked? In other words is the Ford Logo still on the iPod on the lock? What kind of works for me is to reset the iPod. Please note that I still do get the occasional lock (not like yours) and have to reset. Right now I am living with it but I can foresee the day when the Classic will give up the ghost. I have tried the USB approach and it works but I also have had some problems there which may or may not be due to I have placed the songs on the drive. My backup is to use an iPod Nano which seems to have no problems but suffers from lack of memory and the number of songs I can fit on it. I have been told by a Ford Tech on another board that the Classic is obsolete and its software is not updated which contributes to the problem. This is true as apple has defined it as such. You can google to confirm.
tjeeper46
While it is true, the iPod classic is no longer being manufactured by apple, there are millions of these players in active use. Imho, it is too easy to cast blame on Apple, rather than just debug and fix the sync3 bugs. Classics work with MFT and other car brand players, including the after market Sony player I have in my Jeep. It is not rocket science, it needs someone at Ford or Sony to make it a priority. I kind of agree with you but what if the coding issue does have to do with apple and the sync 3 AND if you code correctly for the iPhone and iPod it negates/is incompatabile with the classic? On another note, I have plenty of "old" PC games and productivity software that will no longer work on my present PC simply because the software is no longer compatable with the current operating system. Again, I am just the messenger telling you what I have been told. My Classic works not perfectly in my Escape but currently well enough to put up with the problems. However, I am planning for the day when the drive crashes or it starts performing even less well. I have a 2013 Escape and you are correct with the MFT. However, the OS for the MFT is Microsoft and likely (my guess) will remain pretty stagnent. Works just fine for my wife though.
