Navigation Showing Me Driving Off Road

Recommended Posts

Sync3 navigation shows me going down road then for no reason will show me going off roadway and driving through fields. Along with this compass display on instrument panel seems to stick at times and be way off on direction traveling. Then maybe 5 miles down road will correct itself then mess up again. Ford mechanic stated that without destination programmed in that this is normal and there is not a problem. 2016 Ford Mustang GT Premium California Special. Any input on this?

Did they give a time frame on it? I can't even use it to take a trip. It's like whatever device is used to be the "compass" is messed up. Shows me going right direction on instrument panel , then I can make a turn and shows I never turned sometimes for miles.

I still can't believe the tech told me it's normal, that it's not supposed to track you properly on map without entering a destination. Of course I was told that the remote start is ok too even though it's failed multiple times along with the 1/4 tank of gas that says 50 mikes to empty at an average of 22 mpg. First service trip so far has made me a little skeptical about my service I'm going to receive.

Hey lejones1965,

Have you had the tires rotated or replaced recently?

I just bought the car new a few weeks ago with 1500 miles on it from dealer so I can't say for sure if they would have or not for whatever reason.

lejones,

No problem. Try performing a module reset and let me know what happens. To reset the module: Select radio > Hold the power button (center of the volume knob) + the right-seek button at the same time for up to 5 seconds

Hi Cara,

Please explain the relation between the two?

JJ

Hey JJ,

The navigation system is calibrated with the tires. If the tires have been replaced or rotated, the dealer is supposed to re-calibrate the tires so the navigation doesn't show you driving through a river LOL.

I will try resetting the module tonight when I get home. Just for clarification, on the rearview mirror, should the sensor that faces you be at the top of the mirror or at the bottom of the mirror? Does this model even contain anything in the mirror that would cause a problem with the navigation system? The reason that I am asking is when I had the windows tinted they took the mirror off. It would be real easy to rotate it 180° When they reinstalled it.

Cara,

Thanks

JJ

You're welcome! :)

Thank you Cara and everyone else for your help. I did the reset and it seems to have helped. Only drove short distance so far so I don't know if it's fixed totally but I can see immediately that it did help. I will post update next week after a few days of driving.

The sensor in the mirror won't affect the navigation system, but happy to hear the reset helped. If the problem reoccurs, your next step would be to visit the dealer for a more hands on approach. Have a great weekend!

Cara,

What is involved in the calibration?? The reason that I ask is that I have had my tires rotated many times on my 2013 Escape with Navigation and no one has mentioned anything about a calibration. The only time that my system experiences "driving though fields" is when I drive a short section of redesigned road that is not shown in the navigation (the old road is). Other than that I have experienced no problems. I am still trying to understand wheel rotation and calibration but I would have thought that EVERYTHING was gps signal driven. I sure would like to know more about this!

Same here, even when the road was moved a couple years ago.

If the wheel were somewhat involved, we are talking less than maximum of 5 feet difference in position...

Hey ralph7up,

I can't speculate on the details of the calibration since that is out of my scope. The dealer would be in the best position to answer that for you. :)

For the life of me, I can't figure out what the tires have to do with the navigation system. I thought the nav system uses GPS to locate and maintain the car's relative location on the earth.

Rotating the tires keeps the same size tires on the car, same size, same tread, etc.

Changing tires with a different brand would only change the tread, assuming the same size tire was used.

Doesn't make any sense to me.

Hey everyone!

The navigation system does use GPS to track your location, but it also relies on something called "dead reckoning". If your vehicle loses its GPS connection for any amount of time, it will recalibrate your current position based on the tire rotation. Your dealer may be able to modify the tire circumference settings in your GPS.

Thanks Shaay,

I really could not envision how tire diameter played into the mix!! In general, I am thinking it does not except in the extreme circumstance that you mention. At that point, I still cannot imagine how a tire rotation would make any appreciable difference as the tires would be close enough to the same size.

  • 2 weeks later...

The Sync 2 Nav on my F250 takes an occasional reading from GPS sats, and then uses the tire rotations to determine the distance moved. This is not the best design, unless you happen to carry a truck camper that covers the satellite receiver on the roof. Anyway, I changed tire sizes and that caused the Nav to behave exactly as described. I would start off just fine (because presumably the nav starts off with a fresh GPS reading), but then a few miles down the road I would be driving in the ditch. A few miles further, I would be driving way off the road.

I took the F250 to my dealer, they programmed the new tire size into the computer. However, it did not immediately fix the problem. I discovered the next day that to fix the problem, you need the new tire size programmed into the computer, and you need to do a complete computer system reboot. On a diesel F250, that requires BOTH batteries to be disconnected for about 15 minutes. (I learned this on a Ford truck forum). Once I did a complete reboot, the Nav has worked perfectly now for a year.

The above is for Sync 2. Maybe the same design was used for Sync 3 nav? I don't know. Our Sync 3 car has not yet had a Nav issue, but we have not changed the tires.

Very interesting. Can you recall the change in tire size? I am assuming the overall wheel diameter must have changed a bit. As I said in my earlier post, I cannot imagine normal tire wear and rotation to have any significant impact.

I also have a 2013 Ford Escape with MFT (Sync 2) with navigation. I have not experienced the issues you describe..thankfully.
