  1. That is really interesting. I had the exact same speed issue with my wife's iPhone 6 with Waze and Google Maps and assumed it was the phone because I did not have the issue with my Samsung S7 Edge. Perhaps it was Sync 3 all along. I still need to do the update and will try the next time we take out the RV with its Sync 3 system. I don't want to worry about keeping the system running when it is in storage. Thanks for your post.
  2. I had the memory stick in the port for a good part of our drive back from our campsite to home - at least 30 minutes - and nothing happened. Also no message when I unplugged it. I found the old flash memory that I used for the initial update from 2.2 to 3.0 some months ago and copied the new update to it and will try again on our next trip (which is scheduled for next week). Thanks for the information.
  3. Well, in any case, my Sync 3 system would not accept the usb drive with the update. It acted as though nothing had been inserted into the port and never ran the update. I will try with a different usb stick later when I can get to it and have some time. For safety's sake I tried to do the update while driving as I did not want the auto shutoff to brick my system.
  4. I will try to install it tomorrow and report back what I find. The instructions say to let the engine run during the install but the Sync 3 system is in a Ford Transit with a diesel engine and the Ford manual tells you to not run the engine at idle for "extended periods" (whatever that means) so I will do it while on a trip. Hopefully it will not brick the system.
  5. Can anyone tell me what new functionality is in the latest Sync 3 update? The Ford webpage contains a link that says something about describing the new functionality but the page it takes you to does not contain any information about that. As it is my current Ford Sync 3 system does not recognize my usb-c Android phone (it does recognize my old micro-usb Android phone) and I was hoping that this update might contain a fix for that issue.
  6. Sygic does look nicer, and that is why I pursued this for so long. And it actually is free if you don't want to sign up for Premium. You still get the maps and the navigation, just not the traffic and speed signs. As for myself, I assumed that a $19 cost for lifetime Premium was worth it, but I could have just continued using the free stuff. Of course if Sygic worked under AA it would all be so much easier, but I would have to complain to Google about that and they don't care.
  7. Part of the problem is the restrictions that Google imposes when using Android Auto. Sync 3 supports AA and if Google would loosen their restrictions there would be a lot more compatible apps. Other than that it is largely up to the app manufacturers to create apps that are compatible with Sync 3. All Ford can do is publish the specs and try to get app manufacturers to build the appropriate apps. So I have Sygic Car Navigation working on Sync 3 but Sygic does not want to change their GPS Navigation app to work with Sync 3, and neither of their apps work under Android Auto because Google will not allow them to use it. The problem is not all Ford and Sync 3.
  8. Can't be sure that turning off BT was needed, but I got tired of the constant interference in the opening dialogs and just shut it off on both devices. Still, a success is quite a relief since I have been trying to get this to work for at least 2 weeks. Probably more. Technology is supposed to make life easier, but that is not how it sometimes seems ...
  9. Well, much to my surprise it all worked for me. The steps that @Gadgetjq linked to did not contain all of the information I needed, but I played around and found the proper combination of settings. 1) I removed AA from my Android phone because it kept trying to launch, 2) I disabled AA on the Sync 3 system. Step (1) may not have been necessary if I just disabled it on the vehicle first, 3) I turned BT completely off on my phone so as to prevent the Sync 3 system from trying to connect, 4) Since my phone does not have a active SIM card I had my hotspot running and the wifi connection on the phone connected to it. Once all of that was done I did not have a problem connecting with my Samsung S7 Edge using the micro-usb cable. I still can not connect with my S10+ and the usb-c cable but I suspect that may be a hardware issue with the USB port on the vehicle. One of the interesting things is that the UI looks very different than when run under AA. It matches the description from Sygic but I do not see how to use the notification functionality. Does not seem to be any way to upload accident/road closure/other issue information. I guess I still have to play with it for a while but I was able to get it to work. Thanks again for the link.
  10. Thanks. I read the article but I wonder if it actually works. I guess I should wander on over to the storage area and test it out.
  11. Perhaps it is the fact that they are Samsung phones and Samsung has done something to the OS. I should try something a bit more pure Android but I don't have any other Android phone. Perhaps I will look at some used Pixel or LG phones. Please let me know if you get a response and, if so, what it is. I have only been able to get the apps to work using CarPlay and my wife's iPhone but I would much rather use my Android. More space for storing maps and less guilt for using her phone.
  12. Thanks for the update. One question. Did I understand you correctly? That is, can you get Car Nav to work on the Sync 3 system with your Android phone connected only via Bluetooth and no AA? That is something I have never tried but if it works for you I will give it a try when I get back to the Transit. As far as Maps is concerned, I think you are right about being able to download your route before you leave, but my wife and I are both retired and when we travel we tend to go where ever we think looks interesting at the moment. We have been on numerous trips where we started out thinking that were going to place A but ended up going to place B instead. Makes trip planning an interesting experience, and so we would probably need to be able to download more than just our planned route.
  13. I guess there are 3 different configuration it is possible to use - bluetooth with no usb cable, usb cable without AA and usb cable with AA. I was not aware that the first (bluetooth without cable) was a possibility and I have not tried that. I guess I need to see if that works for me. Unfortunately I use this in a vehicle that I do not have at my house so I will have to wait until Monday to give it a try. It would be nice if that worked. As I mentioned above, my experience has been that I have not been able to get Sygic Car Nav to work properly over a usb cable and, of course, neither works under AA, so I had decided to just use my wife's old iPhone. That works properly but I really don't want to have to drag around another phone and it is old enough that the home button feels like it does not have much life left. I would much prefer to use my new Android phone - the maps are cheaper as are the Premium services if I choose to buy them (the Premium package for Android is $19 and the one for the iPhone is $50. Go figure ...) but I had given up until I saw your posting. Thanks. I have tried both the GPS and the Car Nav software and I actually prefer the Car Nav. The display is easier to see, the information seems more helpful and I think that the GPS really is for driving in and around town. I use this in a small RV and so I am out in the middle of nowhere when using it. Both Waze and Google Maps do work properly for me on my old Android when I run AA but I find I don't much care for the Waze display. Don't really know why, but it does not seem to give me much information. I probably need to make a trip using Google Maps as my nav software and see how that works.
  14. I have been adding Favorites to Sygic GPS and realized that I made made a name error. I tried to find a way to edit the name of the Favorite but could not find any way to do that. I can remove it, but can not find a link to modify the name. I looked in the manual, but found no help there. Is there some way to edit the name of a Favorite? If so, how can I do that?
  15. Are you using an iPhone or an Android phone, and if Android, which one? I ask because I have found a lot of functional differences with the Android stuff when using different Android phones. Just a couple of comments. 1) Both Sygic GPS and Sygic Car work for me properly using an iPhone and CarPlay, 2) Sygic GPS is not supposed to work natively with Sync 3 and I do not see it when I connect an Android phone, 3) I do see Sygic Car on my Sync 3 system when I connect my Samsung S7 Edge but when I try to start the app by pressing on the Sync 3 icon I get a "Waiting for device" message that never goes away, 4) I do not see Sygic GPS on my Sync 3 system when I connect my Samsung S10 Plus, All of this requires a usb cable. There is so much variation in how the apps work or don't work that I have given up on the Android stuff. I have been trying to figure out what is going on with my Android phones and all that I can see is that perhaps it has something to do with the usb cable connection. My S7 Edge, which does work, uses a micro usb cable. My S10 Plus, which does not work, uses a usb-c cable and perhaps my Sync 3 system (on a 2018 Ford Transit) just does not work properly with the newer usb-c cable. Don't know but I have given up on Android and will use an old iPhone 6 and CarPlay. Everything works with that.
  16. I can't speak about Apple Maps, but Waze and Google Maps require internet connectivity to be able to compute a route. We frequently travel where cell service is at best spotty so an on-board set of maps is a big help. There are a couple of additional reasons for getting something like Sygic. 1 - while the Google stuff is free I am not sure that Google will listen to customers and their complaints to address issues as quickly as a company that depends upon customer purchases to stay in business, 2 - in the limited testing I have found that some of the built-in functionality in the Sygic software is really quite helpful. For example the ability to create a favorite using the maps is very helpful when you don't have an address or known POI to use as a reference. 3 - similarly it is quite easy to create a favorite from "Current Location" in Sygic and I have not seen that in Waze or Google Maps. 4 - although Sygic wants you to upgrade to Premium, and keeps asking you to do so, the cost of the upgrade is very low, at least now. $12.00 or so for lifetime map updates does not seem like a big cost. Certainly the Google stuff is very good for "free" software if you can deal with the stream of advertisements, and I have used Waze, but I find that there are definite pluses to using Sygic and it is also "free" if you don't want the Premium upgrade. I plan to keep both on my phone.
  17. Which is exactly what I think. The phone that works with the Ford car Sync 3 modules does not work with the Sync 3 module in the Transit chassis. I am going to try to run the nav software without AA and see if that works. I am not particularly hopeful, but I think it is worth a try. Then I will try one more time with the newly ordered cable but then I think I am done with it. I have been trying to get it working through AA for almost a month and have tried perhaps 20 times, using different cables, different initialization steps and so on, but nothing has worked. A couple of more tries and, if nothing, then back to the old iPhone or the old Samsung and I am done.
  18. I have had issues with AA. When I run it using my old Samsung S7 Edge I can connect the phone to the Sync 3 system and it works most of the time but when I try it with my new Samsung S10 Plus I can not connect to the Sync 3 system at all. I keep getting the "The device is not responding" message. I have tried about a half-dozen different usb-c cables but it has not made any difference. The old Samsung uses micro usb and works fine. I can get the iPhone 6 to work through CarPlay without any problem but can not get AA to work at all with my new Android phone. People keep telling me that I need a good data cable but the cables I have been using to try to connect to AA with the new phone all work properly with the Sync 3 systems in the Ford cars I have tested. It just does not work in the Ford Transit HD 350 that is the chassis for our small RV. There is always hope and someone suggested a specific cable so I have ordered that to test. Will try when it arrives. Hope springs eternal ...
  19. I have run them both through the Sync 3 system and both work properly. The Sygic documentation says that Car Nav is for the vehicle info system but, in fact, both work properly using an iPhone and CarPlay so both work with the info system. The only real issue that I have seen is that when I use GPS with the info system I do not see any way to report issues or see other people's reports. I can see that on the phone but not on the info system. Added to that I don't think that Car Nav even has reporting functionality as I can find no way to access it either on the info system or on the phone.
  20. I have been trying out both Sygic Car Navigation and the GPS version hooked up to my Sync 3 system and I have not been able to find any way using Sync 3 to report issues like road closures, construction and accidents. I can do that with the GPS software on the phone but not using Sync 3 and I can not do it with Car at all. What am I missing? Can Car take any reports? If so, how? I can not find any links to report. I am also puzzled by the maps for both Sygic products since I have had to download every map twice - once for GPS and once for Car. Do they not share maps? Thanks for any help.
  21. Just saw some spam posting and looked for some way to report it to have it taken down, but I could not find any link to report it. Is there something that can be done to remove spamming posts?
  22. This is exactly what I have found when trying to use my wife's iPhone 8 Plus. If I remove the phone from the Sync 3 list of paired devices and start from scratch each time I usually (and only usually) get Waze to show up on the screen. I have been trying to understand what I was doing wrong as it was way too much trouble to go through that process every single time I restarted the RV to continue on a trip. This only works for me with my older (and no longer SIM-ed) Samsung S7 Edge. My new Samsung S10 Plus will not work at all and to even get it close to working I have to go through a process similar to what I used with my wife's iPhone - remove the device as a known bluetooth contact, open the Apps link under Android setup on the phone, clear the memory on both Android Auto and Waze, reboot the phone and then go through the pairing and usb connection. I then get the Android Auto screen, but often I also get a "phone not responding" message so it is all for naught. My S7, however, works without issue with Android Auto and I have begun to wonder if there might be some usb issue. The S7 is a usb-2 connection via a micro usb cable and the S10 is a usb-3 connection via a usb-c cable. This is all on a Ford Transit 350 HD chassis which has a small RV built on it. The Transit is a 2018 model, but was produced late in 2017 (December) and that is why I wonder about the usb connection. I have tried my new phone on Ford cars, both 2018 and 2019, and it works properly with those Sync 3 systems. I only have trouble with the Sync 3 system in my RV. I have thought it might be some OS setting on the phone, but then I don't see why it works on the cars but not on the Transit chassis. I am going to try this the next trip we take, which may be tomorrow if the weather is OK. I had thought that if this worked I might try getting a used iPad mini (with SIM card) to use with the Sync 3 system) but the iPads do not have CarPlay installed on them and Apple tells me I can not add it, so I guess that option is also out. Perhaps some older Android tablet has has a SIM card and hence is gps enabled. According to Ford I am up to date, but I only have 18093 and 19149 is not available in the US (to the best of my knowledge). I have seen links to the later version on some of the forums, but I am reluctant to install a version of the software that is not currently available in the US. It most certainly did help. Thank you very much. I still have this issue with the newer phones but the idea of using CarPlay to run Waze is a big help.
  23. It was iPads with a SIM card that I was referring to. They are GPS enabled and should provide as accurate a location fix as any phone, but they only cost an additional $10/month on my data plan while a phone costs much more. As an alternative I have also been thinking about an Android tablet that would be gps enabled. My problem has been that I have been having trouble getting the Sync 3 system in my van chassis to talk properly to our new phones - a Samsung S10 Plus and my wife's iPad 8 Plus - and thought an older tablet might solve the problem. Hence my question.
  24. I re-read the FAQ and if you read it carefully it is clear that it is the Waze + AppLink combination that requires CarPlay to be disabled, not Waze itself, so although I could complain that the information was not clear I can not say it was wrong. My mistake. I do not know if that functionality is in the Sync 3 system in my Transit chassis but I will find out the next time I try this. The chassis is 2018 but I am not sure that they upgraded the van chassis as quickly as the cars. The same phone and cable combination that worked in a 2018 Fusion did not work in my 2018 Transit but perhaps all of that will be taken care of by using CarPlay and not AppLink, so thank you for clarifying that for me. I tried to do all of this with an iPad instead of an iPhone (the phone is my wife's and I really did not want to use it for navigation as she uses it for calls when we are on the road) but I did not have much luck with the iPad. It is not gps enabled so all location information is only an estimate based on internet usage and it does not offer CarPlay anyway.
  25. @mvan231 So you are saying that the FAQ and instructions on the Ford web page that says that you have to disable CarPlay to run Waze are wrong? If so, then I am not terribly surprised as their instructions for updating the Sync 3 system were completely wrong.
