Fail to Sync 3 Update

Recommended Posts

What I'm doing wrong? I own a 2018 F150 with sync 3.0 on it. I entered to owners.ford.com and find out a update is available. After downloaded and decompressed the file, loaded on a ExFat formatted thumb drive and plugged in the USB port under the console nothing happened. I tried leaving the file compressed and with several sticks with no luck. I tried to do it using Wi-Fi, after I hit "check for updates now" it returned with the current date and time as the last updated checked but wont do anything and the version continues as 3.0

Hi papaoso. It is extremely difficult to troubleshoot something like this over the Internet, when we can not see what is actually being done and what has happened.

Please do not take this the wrong way, but in most cases, the problem is some sort of user error. Whether it is accidentally missing a step in the downloading and/or file setup on the USB, or when the USB has been inserted into the vehicle.

We can assume you had your vehicle running when you plugged the USB in, and kept your vehicle running? How long did you give the update to begin before giving up?

Are you downloading the SYNC3 update file on a PC or a Mac? If from a Mac, I would recommend trying to download from a PC (if you can), since we have seen a few cases of problems when downloading, unzipping etc., on a Mac

The only way to possibly help would be for you to type up every single step you took along the way (from file download to USB insertion), to see if you missed anything or not. It would be tedious for you. And even then, it would be difficult to assess the problem.

So my first recommendation would be to print up the full instructions, then download the file new and try again, following the steps exactly.

Forget about WiFi updates. Even with an exceptionally strong WiFi signal, they are iffy at best in SYNC 3.

Download the file

unZIP the file to where you know it is.

you should get 1 file that has content, and 1 file that is a 0K file ( both are ok ). autoinstall.lst and DONOTINDX.MSA

then you should get a SyncMyRide folder with files in it, leave them all alone.

If you are on a Mac, it will work, you just need to Create the SyncMyRide folder and drag the contents of the SyncMyRide\filename.tar..... (etc) files into it, and rename them to just the file names, minus the SyncMyRide\. (don't do anything to the other 2 files)

On Windows it seems to be ok when unpacking the .zip file you get from Ford/Lincoln

On a USB stick (some have luck with 3.0 sticks, most have better luck with 2.0 sticks, what ever works for you). format is exFAT (Or Fat32)

ONLY have the 2 files and the folder (with other files) on it...  it is safer this way.

(do this in an open area so you don't get exhaust) insert the USB stick, start your car... let it got for 20-30 minutes (or till it tells you it is ok to take out the flash drive, you can leave it in there long after just in case)

You might have to open the door, and wait a minute then close it.... it should finish, and the verion should show up.... sometimes it takes a minute or two to show up

(being you started with 3.0, it will stay 3.0. just the revision will change (3.0.xxxxx to 3.0xxxxxx)

Thanks,  I start to see light at the end of the tunnel. The problem seams to be the file system. The first USB stick were formated on exfat. I give a try on fat32 and the update begun. Now I have a warning about they need to connect to a Wi-Fi, I should answer yes and connect to Wi-Fi to continue with the update?

I answer no and the update continued from the thumb drive. Now the software version is 3.0.20204. After uploaded the confirmation file to owners.ford.com I check again for update and no new update are available to my system. This is the last update for this system? I saw something about 3.4 for what system it is?

Hi papaoso. You have successfully updated to the latest available version of SYNC 3 for your vehicle.

Vehicles that came factory equipped with SYNC 3, such as yours, can not be factory upgraded through/by Ford to SYNC 3.4.

There are third party ways to "upgrade" to SYNC 3.4, but they are not approved by Ford and can cause issues for various reasons, such as certain hardware and software incompatibilities etc.

In addition, if your vehicle is still within the 3 year/36,000 mile New Vehicle Warranty or any extended warranty that covers SYNC/electronics etc., I would definitely recommend against performing any of these third party "upgrades" while still under warranty.

Good luck.

3.3 and 3.4 came with the 2019's and beyond (some 2018's)

and yes there is a way, but Ford does not cover it.  So you would be on your own for that if you decide to go that route.

and now the 2021/22's will be 4.0 (TBD on which ones)

Oh, and as far as WiFi, just go into the settings and turn off the Wifi, or at least the requesting to use it.  😎
