New User - review so far "Pitiful"

Recommended Posts

Bought a 2019 Fusion Titanium for my wife to replace her 2010 Fusion SEL.   The sync on the 2010, which I only use for Phone and bluetooth audio is functional but has some issues.   The new car  has the newer sync and it is the worst most un-intuitive SW I have ever used.    Felt like punching the screen after 10 minutes of frustrating interaction with the unit.   You try to put a known hotel name as POI in for a distant destination and although it's one of maybe 5 hotels in that town,  all you get is names of unrelated businesses in other towns.   Ford makes you stare at their low screen so you are sure to swerve and kill yourself and others.   It might be quicker if for the next model car they would locate the screen next the brake pedal just to speed up the inevitable crash.

Couldn't figure out voice commands to find past destinations. When you shut the car off to get gas, you loose the destination.   My 8 year old garmin remembers if you temporarily shut it down and has a previously found menu.

Any reason why you can't say redial to call the last number.    Every phone I have owned in the last 20 years had a redial button.   Hello programmers - ever use a phone?

Just getting started.  Hopefully it will get better with use.   I did find commands that were not listed where I could say state "name", city "name"... to enter addresses.   Had no luck getting the SW to understand the entire address the way they recommended it be entered.

Is there an instruction manual for this thing?

Sorry for the rant but when Consumer Reports said it was better I believed them.

Hi, below is a list of voice commands you can try using - most of them work with all models, but there are some commands that are version specific.

The POI etc does take some getting used to for sure.

I guess they didn't think of a command to redial last number! :)

The future for many users is to use Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, which SYNC3 supports.

If you have a modern mobile phone and are happy to plug it in each time, then instead of learning how to operate SYNC3, you could spend your time learning Android Auto or Apple Carplay instead - which will bring you a whole new level of frustrations too, but I personally really enjoy using Android Auto and Waze for navigation - and I really recommend you take a look.

Also, when running Android Auto or Apple CarPlay - you can ask "the assistant" really anything that comes to mind and can expect some sort of response...  what will the weather be today, what is the sports score for yyy, remind me to call joe at 4pm, add eggs to my shopping list.

SYNC3 was great when it first came out, but I havent used it for a few years now.

Good luck!

Here are the SYNC3 commands you can try...

"Audio <on/off>"
"<AM/FM> <station number>"     "<DAB> <station number>"
"<USB>"

"Play <Track Name>"        "Play <Artist Name>"
"Play <Genre Name>"        "Play <Album Name>"
"Play <Playlist Name>"

"Browse all <category>"
"Shuffle"            "Shuffle off"

"Call <name> <at home/at work/on cell/on other>"
“Dial" | pause | "<phone number>"
"Call voicemail"
"Do not disturb <on/off>"

Messages
"Listen to message"
“Reply to message” | pause | follow prompts

“Climate” | pause | “<Warmer/Cooler>”
“Climate 20”            “Climate set temperature to 72 degrees”
“Climate automatic”        “Climate <on/off>”

“Climate” | pause | “<Increase/Decrease> fan speed”
“Climate” | pause | “Min/Max fan”
“Climate” | pause | “AC <on/off>”
“Climate” | pause | “Max AC <on/off>”

Change voice interaction level     "Interaction mode <novice/advanced>"

"<Mode> list of commands"
Audio, Radio, Sirius, DAB, USB, SD Card, Bluetooth Audio, Phone, Climate
Services, Travel Link, Navigation, Browse , Voice Settings, Voice Instructions

Hi ltng. I purchased a 2018 Lincoln MKZ in June of 2018. Trust me, it gets easier once you become acquainted with the system and learn more of the commands. Also, if you have not noticed, when you press the SYNC button, basic command suggestions will show at the bottom of the screen to help get you started. Then when you give a command, another set of recommendations will come up on the bottom of the screen. It simply takes time to get used to it, just like getting used to the different physical placement of knobs, buttons and switches between when you jump into an new/unfamiliar car.

Also, do you have the voice assistance turned on or off? At least during the learning process, turn on voice assistance so that the system can give suggestions and talk you through operation. Yes, having to listen to the suggestions can delay things, but it helps while learning. And if you already know what you want to do, just press the SYNC button again and you can skip the voice assistance and give a command.

Something else that may help would be to register your vehicle on the Ford Owners website...https://owner.ford.com/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIh6n5pcnq5wIVSZyzCh0KJwnREAAYASAAEgKJgvD_BwE&amp;searchid=160581195|13270894275|&amp;ef_id=EAIaIQobChMIh6n5pcnq5wIVSZyzCh0KJwnREAAYASAAEgKJgvD_BwE%3AG%3As&amp;s_kwcid=AL!2519!3!267771591263!e!!g!!ford owners ... and peruse the SYNC tutorials and tutorial videos.

Good luck.

Must be a higher Version because I'm still stuck with 1 "Climate" command which is Pitiful...

Hi NOTMY. To my knowledge, Build 19205 is the latest available SYNC 3 build. And I believe what asteele posted was not necessarily what comes up on his SYNC screen, but a list of available commands. Every command does not come up on the screen. I am guessing he may have obtained that list from his Owners Manual. I'm sure he will correct me if I am wrong.

However, I have a 2018 MKZ, updated twice from 17xxx, to 18xxx, to Build 19205, and all of those commands asteele listed work in my car.

Like all of us, you will need to do some learning. So as mentioned previously, the best thing we can do is peruse the SYNC section of our Owner Manuals, where there is a pretty extensive list of available commands, and utilize the tutorials and tutorial videos available on the Lincoln Owners website.

EDIT - I can also mention that there is a newer NAV map update, if you are interested. The latest NAV maps version is NA 1 18 (you are on NA 1 14). However, you may not be interested, since you will probably have to pay.

The first update after vehicle purchase is free and it looks like you never updated. However, I am not sure if there is a time limit on that free update.

Hope this information helps and good luck.

On my 2018 Fusion Platinum build 19025, the only Climate command that works is Set Temperature.  Maybe the Lincolns get the additional commands....

Same on my Lincoln MKX 13 and 16 but apparently you and I should do some learning...

Hi NOTMY. It is a new system that most of us need to learn. So yes, "Like all of us". 🙂

Good news, there 'is' an instruction manual for that thing!  😃 Looking at the '19 Fusion owner's manual there's an entire section devoted to Sync3.  The section includes everything from screen layout to voice commands.  I'd suggest opening the manual to that section and sit in the Fusion looking at each function.  It's a lot easier than trial and error and you might even discover you like Sync3 better than anything you've used before.  If not, there's always your Garmin or use Google Maps or Waze in Carplay or Android Auto.
BTW Sync3 'does' remember addresses I'm navigating to after engine shutdown and restart.  In my '16 Edge mapping just picks up where it left off so maybe dig deep in to your settings menus to see if a function has been turned off?

In my 2018 f150 The whole sync system is garbage. Especially the gps. Maps at least 5 years out of date. A lot of Hotels, campgrounds that it directs you to don't exist. Out of 3 campgrounds, 1 had been gone at least 10 years and is a subdivision, another closed 8 years ago and the third had moved 2 miles away, with a new address about 4 years ago.  2 hotels had been ripped down and had 20 story apartment buildings erected. One way roads not marked or marked wrong way. I just use my cheap portable garmin.

Yup, if you still have the stock maps, my guess is they are 1-15 or 14 and those would be about 3 years old at that time

Ford was offering maps updates, free for 2019 and after, and about 40-100 for 2018 and before.... they might still be... the maps would be 1-18, those are about 3 years old as well...

It would be best to update to Sync 3 3.0 so you can use Android Auto, or Carplay ... they are much more accurate.... most auto makers are getting rid of built in for AA and CP instead...

Hi Multitask. A single NAV maps update is free for 2018 Lincoln/Ford vehicles. We must pay after that first free update. The latest current version is NA 1 18, which incorporates updates through the first quarter of 2018.

Ford SYNC 3 NAV map updates are obtained here: https://syncnavigation.com/ford/home

Lincoln SYNC 3 NAV map updates here: https://syncnavigation.com/lincoln/home

Why haven't you updated your mapping software?  For your '18 it should be a free download.  Granted, it's only current as of the first quarter 2018 but it's going to be a lot better than what you're currently using.
Visit this page: https://syncnavigation.com/ford/home
Enter your VIN and the ESN from your 'Sync About' screen then download your new map.  Freebie!
For the most current POI information you should still use Google Maps or Waze but thats easy with Android Auto or Carplay.

Shhh... while I have not seen them yet... 1-19 is floating around... makes me think that if you wait a couple month, and it's still free, you might get 1-19

I would like to thank everyone for their replies.   This weekend, I'll take a seat in car in the driveway and see what I can learn.

1-18 might be what is available in 2018, but they maps in general are always about 2-3 years behind.

Kenwood and the rest are in the same boat... only Google Maps, or Waze, or some of the stand alone like Garmin are current....

Hi Multitask. Correct. I also stated the information was two years old in another thread we are both in.

Navigation information gathered up through the first quarter of 2018 (NA 1 18 ) would now be two years old anyway, no matter how new it was in January of 2018. I thought that was relatively self explanatory. 😉

And just as an FYI for others: At least as far as the information available on  the Lincoln NAV update website, NA 1 19 is still not available.

Not sure if I will pay for it when it is. I will probably update every two years. I like using the in-dash NAV. I can always use my phone with Google Maps/Maps/Waze if I need to. Haven't needed to yet, so I've been lucky.

Hope this information helps. Good luck. 😀
